Yikes. Travel will hit $1 trillion in revenue by 2027. Got #overtourism? How will destinations, nature, culture and local communities survive? Or can robust tourism growth (if managed well) be good for all stakeholders? 🧐 ~ Rob In 2024, tourism will increase 8.3% over 2023. The industry is set to gross $927 billion by the end of 2024, and is on track to jump 14% to hit $1.03 trillion in revenue in 2027. 😱 Questions >> Lots to process. Lots to consider, amid so many challenges across tourism today. So what destinations will successfully manage this rapid growth? Who will struggle? Hotels continue to boom — Almost 50% ($494 billion) of the money will come from hotels, with packaged holidays making up another 30% ($331 billion). >> That could mean a lot of new development? Or maybe existing properties refurbished and expanded? More cruise ships — Cruising will be one of the fastest-growing segments of travel over the coming years. It will be a $35 billion market in 2027, or $5 billion more than 2024. >> I assume this means more large cruise ships? Or what about more small cruise ships? 🚢 Lots of new travelers — More than 500 million new travelers will enter the market over the next three years, bringing its total number to 2.25 billion. >> Everyone deserves to travel. But how can destinations manage this volume growth while also not exceeding their own tourism #carryingcapacity? Growth everywhere — All segments of the travel and tourism industry will see substantial user growth in the next three years. The outdoors is way popular — The camping market will continue to grow by 7.28% (twice as fast as the hotel industry), and hit $60 billion in revenue by 2027 (up from $48 billion this year). >> I love all aspects of the outdoors. And religiously get my family and kids out into nature. But how will this continued rapid growth impact the fragile nature and the outdoors that we love in its protected state? Europe is getting HOT (at least here in the South). As summer travel peaks, overtourism remains a pressing issue. Insights from EHL Hospitality Business School reveal key strategies for mitigating its impact on you as a traveler: 1. Stay Overnight: Avoid day-trip crowds by staying overnight in popular destinations. 2. Travel Off-Peak: Choose shoulder seasons for fewer crowds and better experiences (my favorite). 3. Explore Alternatives: Opt for lesser-known destinations offering similar attractions (DM for Spain 🇪🇸 or Portugal 🇵🇹 tips). As a hotel brand, you can leverage AI tools to: 1. Analyze travel patterns and optimize tourist flow. 2. Provide real-time crowd data to guests. 3. Recommend alternative routes and attractions to enhance guest experiences and reduce pressure on popular sites.
