Most people don’t know about this $711 billion industry. It's an essential part of your travel experience. What is it? Hint: it's not airlines, hotels, or guided tours. It's ground transportation. That includes buses and trains. There were several major events in the space over the past month. One of them involves a Brazilian bus company: DeÔnibus. It was acquired by Travelier: an Israeli travel tech company. DeÔnibus is a major player in Brazil. It serves 30 million travelers each year across more than 36,000 routes. These routes cover 80% of Brazil across 300+ bus operators. The company has $700K in funding from ACE Ventures and angel investors. Why did Travelier acquire DeÔnibus? It wants to expand its international presence. And Brazil is a good market for this. Here’s some more info: • Bus travel creates over $2 billion in annual revenue • 50% of all international travel purchases are made online • Only 30% of bus tickets are bought online Travelier saw an opportunity in the bus ticketing space. Brazil’s bus industry needs new technology to stay relevant. DeÔnibus CEO and Co-Founder Breno Moraes even said that online sales are “expected to exceed 50% of total sales in the next 2 to 3 years.” So Moraes and his other co-founder Mariana Malveira decided to work with Travelier to digitize bus travel. Travelier is not new to Latin America. The firm previously invested in Plataforma 10 in Argentina. It also owns several B2C and TMS brands across Africa, Asia, and Europe. DeÔnibus is expected to keep its 50% annual growth rate. Travelier’s extensive resources will only help it grow further. More Brazilians will soon be buying their bus tickets online. Travel agents have historically handled the sort of #internationaltravel that requires several hotels, flights, activities, transfers, modes of transportation, and guides. Travelers have limited alternatives because there is no real-time pricing available for such sophisticated goods. With Quadrille Capital leading its €60 million Series D round, Spanish firm Exoticca has succeeded in unlocking that secret. Although multiday trip packages have a sizable market, they are among the least digitally advanced segments of the #tourismbusiness. The platform of Exoticca links local businesses, hotels, transfers, flights, and meals. According to the #organization, this saves expenses by up to 30% and makes booking these more sophisticated packages easier. Additionally, Exoticca states that since 2015, its sales have more than doubled annually. Through a network of physical and #onlinepartners in the travel and non-travel industries, the company currently operates in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Mexico, and Colombia. Pere Vallès, CEO of Exoticca, stated that Thomas Cook created the package tour two centuries ago and that it hasn't really changed since then. "We are introducing a more #digitalmodel that enables us to sell these kinds of products online and offers greater flexibility, along with some significant cost and price advantages." Tourlane, a platform for #onlineresearch and booking that assists travelers in purchasing multiday excursions, is a competitor of Exoticca to some extent. To date, $101 million has been raised by Tourlane. But Exoticca doesn't "see them as competitors," according to Vallès. Their model differs in that it is more focused on the market. Real-time pricing is not provided by them. Vallès stated that his company's main goal is "value for money." "And this brings us to a middle-class and upper-class clientele." From the company's Barcelona headquarters, he continued, "so it's Americans and Canadians traveling to the 70 destinations that we offer." Seventy-five percent of Exoticca's #business is conducted in the United States and Canada. He stated that growth into China, India, the Middle East, and Latin America is the goal. "Exoticca's strong #financialfoundation and the team's exceptional execution are at the heart of our investment thesis," stated Alejandra Duran Gil, a partner at Quadrille Capital, in a statement.
