Happy Independence Day! May we honor the legacy of our founders and every soul that has contributed to the American Experiment in the last 248 years by coming together like these soldiers and: ...recognizing our irreversible mosaic of interdependence and interconnectedness ...accepting our responsibility to positively contribute for all, not simply our right to retreat into like-minded communities and do whatever we want for ourselves ...understanding that our nation is bigger and greater than any one politician or figurehead, any particular party or election or organization, any court case ...celebrating the achievements and progress and legacy of a governmental system that, despite its flaws, was (at its founding) nevertheless revolutionary in its empowerment of people rather than entrenched aristocrats and continues to provide new opportunities and progress ...acknowledging the flaws, often tragic, that our nation (as a product of unavoidably flawed human beings) has enabled and commited ...treating each other with CURIOSITY for what we can learn from others, RESPECT for what others contribute (or have the potential to contribute) to our society (regardless of education, profession, political belief, region, religion, race, gender, orientation, etc, etc), COMPASSION for the struggles we all endure and could use help with and HUMILITY to understand that none of us knows everything and all of us can and are, at times, hypocrites and selfish with blinders on and that we each contribute not just to the good but to the bad. There is no country in which I’d rather live. In the podcast I do for American Tributaries, Inc, I have shared, so far, conversations with people from 44 different states with backgrounds as varied as possible and they have given me resolute hope and belief in the future of the United States of America as it comes from us...the people...not the inflammatory sound bites of media or self-serving exaggerated messages of fundraisers and politicians. Each of us has the ability to make this nation as great as it can be. Far more than whoever is elected in November. THAT’s America. Happy 248th!

That to secure these rights Governments were instituted by men, deriving their just powers by the consent of the governed. Our founders, recognizing the challenges and fallibility of humans during their time and in the future, laid out an aspirational dream toward a more perfect Union. On July 4th we celebrate the courage of those men and women who embraced the idea of freedom and indepedence and sacrificed much to earn it. It took over seven years from the time the Declaration of Independence was signed until the day the British surrendered, but those in the halls of Congress, and those who rallied behind such a powerful ideal didn't know how long the task would last. Today we are honored and inspired by those same "self- evident" truths to continue building a more perfect Union, no matter how long the task will take. The Four Personal Freedoms As we celebrate our 248th Independence Day on July 4th, I want to encourage you to consider your personal freedoms — which you must choose and embrace if you are to be effective and happy. In his book 10X is Easier than 2X, Dan Sullivan makes the important point that you have four freedoms: 1. Freedom of Time by recognizing the value and quality of your time. You have focus/performance time; buffer time for practicing and organizing; and free/rejuvenation time. 2. Freedom of Money by appreciating the value and quality of your true wealth, which is qualitative and subjective. Money alone does not reflect your true wealth. 3. Freedom of Relationship with yourself and others. You have the possibility of forging healthy, valuable, deep and enduring relationships. 4. Freedom of Purpose builds on the first 3 freedoms and requires you to embrace the uniqueness that is you and pursue the purest expression of yourself. It means discovering your purpose for being and having a clear sense of your mission. Defining your purpose in every stage in life is of critical importance! We live in an era of great confusion and disappointment with governance and a general dissatisfaction in our representation in OUR government. Allow me share some memorable advice my granma used to share to me- "things seem to always get worse before they get better", or even more shared, "It's always darkest right before dawn". The idea of "America" was that of a "great experiment", at a time where entire nations were either ruLED by a monarchy or were empires were RULED by emperors, a group of enlightened people conceptualized the idea of a nation ruled by the people. They even postulated a number of scenarios in that! Some were unrealistic, some were marginally laughable. But the concept was so appealing, men were willing to die for it. In the decades around what we today know as America's "Independence Day", this nation developed a principle that would be used over and over in many other lands on this planet. Back to today- I try to remember the advice from my granma when I understand that the experiment is still running, because the settings were never potted in epoxy- Lest we forget that those enlightened people considered that times would change, society would change and thus governance should be able to change to support that change. I won't waste your time talking about the things we should have learned in our civics classes in school, but consider those now... As we celebrate our Independence, let us also remember that the cost of FREEDOM is NEVER FREE- When we are a military protecting the homeland from external influences that would compromise the autonomy of our nation's governance or it's people's freedoms, OR safety. Or, a citizen that understands that we are not expected to leave the governance of our country to someone else, but that a government "Of, WE the People" means that what we have is the product of our contributions, or lack there of... Make America what you expect it to be, make YOUR contributions to it- participate in the government of it, scrutinize the abilities and effectiveness of those you choose to represent you in government, consider what happens to the governance as that representative exploits your representation- we are NOT choosing leaders here folks- we are CHOOSING those that REPRESENT our expectations in the governance of this "Nation built on the GREAT EXPERIMENT... Happy 4th of July- Let Freedom Ring!
