Despite the rollout of campus and classroom mental health programs there continues and will continue to be a disparity between the need for services and those who are receiving mental health services. Creating forums for discussion paired with the implementation of innovative ideas assists in decreasing the disparities. Above all else, engagement and positive connection are imperative to youth's willingness to engage in treatment services. The expectation for youth to reach out and seek services, in times of despair, is counterintuitive to what we know about developmental stages and emotional IQ. Considering the stages of development, the programs that we create must be focused on personal invitation and ongoing support for youth, their families, and their caregivers.

Did you know over one-third of older adults aged 50+ report feelings of isolation? Seniors dealing with loneliness and depression are more likely to experience physical illness such as heart disease or high blood pressure. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, reminding us of the importance of seeking help, having more conversations, and practicing self-care. Learn about how our services treat the whole person as we advocate for seniors’ mental and physical needs.

Teens are speaking out about their needs to improve mental health. According to research from Next City and Crisis Text Line, social connections, artistic outlets, and access to mental health services are the top three factors that young people cite as essential for coping with mental health crises. Unfortunately, many of these programs and resources are underfunded or are losing funding. As Mental Health Awareness Month ends, let’s join together in urging our leaders to invest in our young people and the resources they say are crucial to their well-being.
