To all the PhD students in my network: When I saw last year's post about the QuanTIM Webinars' PhD Student Award, I thought: "My achievements are far from outstanding." Thankfully, I applied anyway and receiving this award allowed me to prepare a webinar, which was an enjoyable way to share my research. The SESSTIM team made the process smooth and unintimidating. Now, my webinar is on YouTube, so when I get tired of explaining my PhD subject over and over, I can just press play! (kidding) Additionally, the prize helped fund my participation in an international conference – a wonderful 2-in-1 gift. If your work is not selected, that's ok, you have now a wonderful 5-pages article that can be a base for your future manuscript. Don’t judge the quality of your research yourself. Let others recognize it — it might turn out to be one of the most exciting opportunities of your year.

🎉 Excited to share that I’ve completed my 1st year as a PhD student! 🎉 While this first year came with several bumps and bruises, it has also been incredibly rewarding. I have done things I never thought I would, or even could; mostly because of what other people said. But God saw fit to place me in an environment where I could thrive despite the odds that were stacked against me. A few of my most valuable experiences: - Submitted my first grant application – fingers crossed! 🤞 - Mastered working with mice models to study microbiome and immune cell interactions 🐁🔬 - Designed and completed Part 1 of my initial animal study 🧪 - Created a network with leading sickle cell experts and initiated collaborations to further our understanding of sickle cell disease from an immunological perspective 🩺 - Began building the framework of an IRB protocol for what I hope will be a pivotal part of my PhD research 📝 Grateful for the support from my mentors, colleagues, and collaborators. Looking forward to the challenges and discoveries that Year 2 will bring! #PhDLife #AcademicJourney #WomenInSTEM #BlackInScience #ImmunologyMicrobiomeResearch #SickleCellDisease #TranslationalResearch

Two weeks ago: the NCD Policy Lab had the privilege of participating in the Science Fair at Kyrgyz State Medical Academy (KSMA), where the incredible potential of young researchers was on full display ✨ In collaboration with the Health Policy Analysis Center, a microgrant was awarded to support a study on diabetes awareness in #Kyrgyzstan. The findings were striking: a significant lack of knowledge about #diabetes risk factors, coupled with the fact that most individuals only visit their doctor once a year. These insights are essential for improving both prevention and care. 💡 Why is this important? The study underscores the importance of community-driven research in addressing knowledge gaps related to Noncommunicable diseases (#NCDs). It also highlights the role of global initiatives like the Global Diabetes Research Agenda, launched on November 20th, in supporting collaborative efforts to improve health outcomes. Highlights from the KSMA event: 🔹 Opportunities within the NCD Policy Lab for student scientific societies. 🔹 STERN Group's Research: Insights into diabetes awareness. 🔹 Career Perspectives: Shared by David Beran, Assistant Professor at the University of Geneva. 🔹 Awards & Recognition for emerging researchers at the student scientific clubs fair. The NCD Policy Lab is playing a critical role in bridging the gap between #science and policy, creating platforms that integrate research into decision-making. Empowering the next generation of researchers is key to developing sustainable and informed approaches to global health challenges. #KSMA #Kyrgyzstan #Research #Diabetes

Beginning in May 2025, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will mandate that researchers use the Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae (SciENcv) when applying for NIH funding. SciENcv is an electronic tool that helps researchers organize and manage the information required for federally funded research participation. It enables the creation and maintenance of biosketches for grant applications and annual reports, while also allowing researchers to describe and highlight their scientific contributions. For further details, visit the NIH website: https://bit.ly/4h2suER Emory University offers a useful guide on SciENcv and how to set up your account: https://bit.ly/4fPECrc #ATune #Transnetyx #AnimalResearch #LaboratoryAnimalSciences
