I was struck by this quote from Javier Sainz de los Terreros of the Museo Nacional del Prado when speaking about museum patrons at the NEXTIN Summit in Madrid: “They are now empowered”, he said. “They want to take part in decision making and effect change. Museums have now become listeners.” This sums up the shift as we move from a content-centric world to a community-centric world. It's no long just about just creating content for audiences to passively consume. It's now about creating spaces where fans can come together, connect with each other, and actively shape the experience. Of course, creating this space is a lot easier if you already have a museum. But just providing a space isn't enough. You have to design it to facilitate connections, not just for consumption. Scotland's first fully digital museum. The scheme will see the Leith Custom House in Edinburgh, previously used as a store for the National Museum of Scotland, turned into a hybrid cultural space. There will be community-creative studios, commercial and retail opportunities, and the fully digital gallery spaces on the first floor. The galleries will display both community-created artworks and historical items from Leith's archives. This sounds like an exciting initiative and mixed-use spaces definitely helps so many cultural spaces adapt and survive. Digital re-imagining and presenting of archive materials can help audiences enjoy the materials in new, exciting and more accessible ways, and there are many materials that lend themselves to multimedia displays. There is still something though, in relation to the historical items from the archive, about the intangible power of seeing the actual object yourself as a visitor that is the USP of museums. It will be interesting and exciting to see how these plans develop. https://lnkd.in/eX_jgsVk

10moNot just museums! And not even fans; in what I do, clients tell me all the time about the value they get from connections they make with people who are trying to learn about the same things, on the same journey, going through a shared experience, etc.
