Restricting nurses on the ground of “staff shortage” when up to half of the thousands of high quality nurses it is producing annually have not been meaningfully engaged. This recent NMCN developments have raise concerns because the rules and regulations are seemingly crafted to the detriment of nurses. Additionally, there appears to be a subtle shift of responsibilities from the NMCN to the nurses’ employers to identify nurses who are out of good standing, which should be the other way round. Such actions are incongruent with the Council’s original mandate and may inadvertently compromise the welfare of our nursing professionals. In light of these observations, the NMCN should reassert its commitment to effective leadership. As we collectively advocate for a renewed focus on the core objectives, ensuring that nurses receive the support, recognition, and protection they rightfully deserve to foster an environment conducive to professional growth, patient care excellence, and ethical practice.
