That 10x reduction in distribution board size might lead to 100x the problems! Using Energy Management System (EMS) setpoint values instead of connected load to design an electrical system with EVSE loads offers compelling CapEx saving opportunities. However, if the system is not designed or monitored properly, there can be serious issues, including: - Overloading distribution boards and other circuits - Violating electrical codes - Vehicle throughput issues - Higher electric utility costs What is particularly concerning about these potential issues is that you might not realize they exist until two or more years after the initial install! At such a time customer expectations have already been set and a costly, unplanned hardware reconciliation outside of warranty probably would not be received well. My advice to anyone working in the EV industry would be to work with someone who deeply understands these hardware and software systems and how they interact with each other. Do not assume that these systems installed according to the electrical code will continue to follow it. As early as possible define fault patterns to look for and determine how you will apply continuous monitoring that enables you to detect them. I’d like to #highlight the #importance of #isolation #measurement and the advanced techniques that are enhancing the #safety and #performance of #EV #batteries🔋. 👉 In the electric vehicle (#EV) industry, #safety and #reliability are paramount. One of the key aspects of ensuring these is the #isolation measurement in #high #voltage Battery🔋 Management Systems (#BMS). ⚡ What is #Isolation #Measurement❓ 👉 #Isolation #measurement involves monitoring the #electrical #insulation between the high voltage #battery pack (Positive Terminal and Negative Terminal) and the vehicle chassis. This is #crucial to #prevent electrical #shocks, #short circuits, and #potential #fire🔥 #hazards. ⚡ Key #Isolation #Measurement #Techniques: 1️⃣ Resistance Measurement(#RM): ✔️ℍ𝕠𝕨 𝕚𝕥 𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕜𝕤: Measures the resistance between the high voltage system (Positive Terminal & Negative Terminal w.r.t the vehicle chassis. Provides a direct measure of insulation quality. ✔️𝔸𝕡𝕡𝕝𝕚𝕔𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕤: Routine monitoring and safety checks. 2️⃣ Insulation Monitoring Devices (#IMD): ✔️ℍ𝕠𝕨 𝕚𝕥 𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕜𝕤: Continuously monitors the insulation resistance and can detect even small changes. ✔️𝔹𝕖𝕟𝕖𝕗𝕚𝕥𝕤: Provides real-time monitoring and early detection of insulation degradation. ✔️𝔸𝕡𝕡𝕝𝕚𝕔𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕤: Integrated into the BMS for ongoing safety assurance. 3️⃣ Differential Current Measurement(#DCM): ✔️ℍ𝕠𝕨 𝕚𝕥 𝕨𝕠𝕣𝕜𝕤: Measures the difference in current between the high voltage and low voltage sides.
