On World Water Day, many great institutions are working on clean, drinkable water. It is equally important to highlight the ecological and recreational benefits of clean water (freash and salt, frozen and flowing). Going for a dip as activitsm, for instance The Big Dip in Belgium, is one such initative. Thinking about watery spaces as ecologies that include humans, according to my #EcoSENSES research is the way forward for more holistic conceptions of water management strategies. #worldwaterday

It is National Tap Water Day (Nationale Kraanwaterdag) here in the Netherlands. 🎉 Thanks to the Nationale Kraanwaterdag organisation (https://brnw.ch/21wN8cI) more children 👧👦 are being educated about the importance of drinking from the tap, creating a future generation of sustainable hydrators. The European legislation 📑 for tap water is only strengthening, bringing safer and cleaner water to our taps. National sales of packaged water have dropped by 14% from 2022 to 2023—a clear sign that more people are making the switch to tap water. 🚰 While there’s still work to be done, this shift is a step in the right direction. Today, let’s appreciate what we often take for granted: clean tap water. Whether you're at home, school, station, or the bathroom—don’t forget to #JustRefill. 🚰 We raise our Dopper to the journey yet to come. We're not done yet.🏋️💧 Waternet WML Vitens #Sustainability #NationaleKraanwaterdag #EndPackagedWater #Kraanwaterdag

At StopUP, we want to support and promote the use of existing and new 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 (𝗦𝘂𝗗𝗦) But what are these SuDS? We feel a little bit of explanation is quite welcome. SuDS are combinations of practices, control structures and strategies designed to efficiently and sustainably drain surface water, while minimizing pollution and keeping an eye on the water quality. SuDS are drainage systems that are considered to be environmentally beneficial, causing no or minimal long-term harm. Examples of SuDS are 💧 detention basins 💧 wetlands 💧 retention ponds 💧 bioretention strips 💧 green roofs 💧 rainwater harvesting systems SuDS are often located in high-population areas, where these systems make a crucial difference, because of the high percentage of paved roads and buildings. SuDS are needed to prevent flooding and combined sewer overflow (CSO). The biggest pro's of SuDS? ✅ Reduce pollution by managing the quality of the runoff ✅ Reduce the flood risk by controlling the quantity of the runoff ✅ Create and sustain better places for people ✅ Create and sustain biodiversity Find out more about our mission at ➡️ stopup.eu.

It's been a rainy month in Belgium ☔ Did you know that the size of impermeable surfaces in Brussels has doubled from 26% in 1955 to 53% in 2022*? Such a high share of impervious surface severely impacts the water cycle: 🌧 increased runoff & sewage dilution, overloading water treatment plants 🤢 overflow of mixed rain & wastewater to the river 🌾 reduced infiltration and water table recharge ♨ reduced evapotranspiration, warming up the urban microclimate The good news is: we can mitigate these impacts if we collect, use & infiltrate rainwater💧! *Sources: [ULB-IGEAT 2006, Bruxelles-Environnement 2024] *And that's including some of the Sonian Forest🌳!
