The water sector needs to build infrastructure at scale over the coming decades. Ahead of her keynote address to the Water Industry Forum on 25 September, Sharon Darcy, chair of the Linear Infrastructure Planning Panel, says competing demands with other sectors over allocation of resources means a collaborative approach is vital. The water industry faces a monumental challenge: delivering the vast infrastructure needed to meet future demands, while navigating a complex landscape of competing projects in energy, transport and communications. #WaterSector #InfrastructurePlanning #SustainableInfrastructure #UKWater #AMP2025 #WaterIndustry Read The Full Article Here https://bit.ly/3zlVzKK

The U.S. government has significantly increased its investment in water infrastructure to address critical needs. The Drinking Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Act of 2021 allocates $55 billion over several years, including $15 billion for replacing lead service lines and $4 billion for PFAS contamination. Despite this, an estimated $123 billion is needed annually to fully meet the nation’s water infrastructure requirements, creating a funding gap of around $40 billion. Enhanced federal funding through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act aims to bridge this gap, with private sector investments also playing a crucial role. #water #infrastructure #governmentspending #sustainability 💦

♻ The UK National Infrastructure Commission has issued its 2024 annual report, calling for significant steps including investment in recycling infrastructure, for all future EfW capacity to include carbon capture and storage (CCS), and for local authorities to not sign or renew EfW contracts without credible plans for CCS. 💡 This corroborates messaging from our upcoming evidence paper titled ‘The role of Waste Derived Fuel in the EU’s Energy and Resources Transition’ (due to be published imminently so watch this space!). 📉 “The greatest potential for methane reduction in Europe is better solid waste management, with landfill diversion into energy from waste and recycling as the priority”. This is in accordance with the waste hierarchy. 🏭 The paper also notes in the future when combined with CCS, the waste management sector could not only become climate neutral but carbon negative, contributing to a clean and safe environment as well as to the wider green economy. 🚢 In the meantime trade in WDF across nations, including the UK and EU Member States, ensures existing capacity is utilised without necessitating new plants with the associated financial and embedded carbon costs. Indeed, this practice is fully supported by the European Commission in its communication on Waste-to-Energy and the circular economy. 🌫 In line with the National Infrastructure Commission report, this will ensure that a landscape of excessive overcapacity is not reached within Europe, which would result in additional emissions from the construction of new facilities, which can become redundant in a low waste future. 👉 For the report: https://lnkd.in/eAr4_jD6 #RDF #SRF #alternativefuels #wastederivedfuel #refusederivedfuel #wastemanagement #energyfromwaste #EfW #WDF #sharedcapacity #CCS

How McConnell Dowell is tackling regional water challenges with creative solutions With regional water distribution systems under pressure from ageing infrastructure, McConnell Dowell is applying cutting-edge solutions to support Australia’s booming regional communities. With regional populations booming, the pressure to modernise water and energy infrastructure has never been greater. Regional areas in Australia saw a net gain of over 160,000 individuals during the 2016-21 period – nearly triple the net gain of the previous five-year period. While this wave of urban migration is a promising step towards addressing acute skills shortages in regional areas, it also means high-growth regions are facing significant strains on their energy and water infrastructure. “With the escalation in the cost of living, you’ve got this challenge where water authorities are trying really hard to contain their water rates, but they also need to build new assets and renew or maintain ageing assets,” said Mario Russo, Managing Director for Australia at McConnell Dowell. “There’s nothing shiny about cutting the ribbon on an underground pipe, so they also get limited funding. It’s a real tug-of-war.” Follow the link to read more......
