I chatted with a colleague today about the crucial importance of "executive presence" for lawyers wishing to build self-sustaining practices.
In fact, when I speak with law firm partners about the type of coaching a senior associate or younger partner may need, one of my very first questions is: "Can they run a room?"
And I'm not asking how they are at public speaking, on webinars or podcasts, or even how effective they are one-on-one. I want to know whether they can command the respectful attention of everyone at the negotiating table, or the equivalent for a litigator or other practitioner (even when, as is not uncommon, they are the only person of their gender in that room).
Most people who thrive as lawyers--and almost all those who build solid practices- - can indeed "run" a room.
The formal word for this skill is "executive presence", and it can sometimes be hard to describe. But it can be learned. Still, lawyers rarely receive the training they need to "have" it.
Gratefully, there are coaches out there who can help. Until I started gathering their names and getting to know them I had only two go-to strategies:
1. Suggest that my clients watch Harvard Business School Professor Amy Cuddy's splendid TedTalk video and read her excellent book, "Presence". (Note: Cuddy's scholarship was unfairly challenged for years, but her aspiring debunkers have been debunked.) Links in the comments.
Or
2. For those with short attention spans whose tolerance for on-screen violence and blood is well established, send them the Game of Thrones excerpt below, in which Daenerys Targaryen (a/k/a Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea The Unburnt Breaker of Chains Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men), to everyone's astonishment, addresses the Unsullied (and their unfortunate, and soon to be very former, owner) in Valyrian and converts them from slaves to soldiers. (Khaleesi, of course, also gives Master Classes in leadership.)
Now Khaleesi, SHE can run a room.

I love Hamilton! One of the songs that resonates with me and has some subtle messaging is "The Room Where It Happens," where Burr voices his exclusion from the ~inner circle~ where critical decisions are made. This captures the essence of a fundamental truth in business and life: being in the room with decision-makers matters.
It grants you access to information and insights where you can hear firsthand the discussions, understand the nuances of the issues, and gauge the sentiment of the room. This ~insider knowledge puts you in a better position to contribute meaningfully to the conversation and influence the outcome as well as foster stronger relationships and allows you to demonstrate your expertise & establish yourself as a valuable asset.
You have the chance to shape the narrative, articulate your perspective, advocate for your ideas and ensure that your voice is heard. Just like Burr, many face barriers to being included in decision-making processes. Whether it's due to gender, race or other factors, these disparities can hinder career advancement and limit opportunities for contribution. We must advocate for inclusive decision-making practices & actively seek out diverse perspectives so that we tap into a broader range of expertise, make more informed decisions & create a more equitable and just society.
TBH - Being in the room with decision-makers is not a guarantee of success, but it is a crucial step in the process. By seeking out opportunities to participate in these discussions, we can amplify our voices, influence outcomes, and make a positive impact on our organizations and communities.
