We can make a difference. We each do make a difference. When I was thinking about setting up The Welcome Home Project last year I was sure it couldn’t fail. Thank goodness for my optimism, ignorance and stubbornness. If it wasn’t for that I wouldn’t have started and now we have been able to make a difference in the lives of 4 mums and 6 children. It wont change the world but for those families it might just change their world. One year on I am blown away by how much amazing work is being done in the sector. I am blown away by how many people care. I have made new contacts, new networks and referrals have come from the most unusual of places. Charities. Connections on Instagram. People I have never met but have told their friends. Their families. I am also blown away by the individual social workers who are trying their very very best to support the mums within a broken system that has nowhere for them to go. So this is my request. Please keep talking about the Welcome Home Project to your friends, families and colleagues. The more we spread the word the more homes we can make. My hope is that it is not only single mums that we can welcome to a place of support, community, facilities and friendship but that we could go one to do the same for care leavers too. There are too many people with no where to go at the moment living in unsuitable hotels, hidden from view whilst mental and physical health slowly deteriorates. This urgent issue calls for immediate attention and action from all of us. Homelessness isn’t just about the absence of shelter; it’s about shattered dreams, lost opportunities, and the struggle for survival. Factors like soaring housing costs and unexpected life changes can affect anyone, making it clear that this crisis could impact us all. With one in three individuals living just a paycheck away from homelessness, we must act swiftly to address this pressing issue. We have an incredible opportunity to make a difference at the upcoming CEO Sleepout UK events! Join us on Monday, 25th November at Lord's Cricket Ground in London and Thursday, 28th November at Luton Town Football Club. These gatherings will bring together passionate individuals and community leaders dedicated to combating homelessness. 🌍 Today is World Homeless Day: A Call to Action 🌍 On October 10th, let’s take a moment to raise awareness and extend compassion to the millions of people experiencing homelessness across the globe. Homelessness is not just a global issue—it affects our local communities in profound ways.  Each one of us can make a difference, even with small actions. Here are five ideas to help your local unhoused population: 1. Volunteer your time: Whether at a shelter, food bank, or outreach organization, dedicating your time can make a huge impact. Your support can provide essential services or simply bring warmth and connection to someone in need.    2. Donate supplies: Gather donations of essential items like warm clothing, hygiene products, or blankets, especially as we approach colder months. Many local shelters and organizations have wish lists of needed supplies. 3. Support local housing initiatives: Advocate for affordable housing policies in your area. Support initiatives that push for more housing development and resources for those facing housing insecurity. 4. Share your expertise: If you have skills in healthcare, law, counseling, or employment services, consider offering your professional expertise to support individuals who are unhoused, helping them regain stability. 5. Raise awareness and fundraise: Use your voice on social media and within your community to spread awareness. Fundraising efforts, even small ones, can help local organizations sustain their crucial work. Each action, no matter how small, contributes to creating a more compassionate and inclusive community. St Mungo's and others work tirelessly to try and get to a point where there isn't a need for a day like this. there is solution... This week at St Mungo's we are running our client involvement week. why? Because if we take more care to listen and understand the experiences of people who experience homelessness and live in our services then we can shape and develop better services and help the people we work with achieve better outcomes. Those voices need to be heard by government, local authorities and the organisations that work with people experiencing homelessness. Our client Advisory board, our Service co design group and our Client Ambassadors will help amplify the voices of our clients and affect change As one of our Ambassadors said to our board of trustees " the message I want to get across is homelessness journey is unique to the individual and doesn't always look like what people think it does" A shout out to the organisations doing fantastic work to ensure this happens Groundswell - Homelessness Charity UK , New Horizon Youth Centre , Crisis , Centrepoint , Shelter , Depaul UK and many more it doesn't have to be like this, listen to people's experiences, diversify provision, tighten up rental protections, build more affordable housing , increase funding for charities doing vital work and maybe we won't need WHD.... just a thought #coproduction #expertsbyexperience #listen #homelessness #

With Louder Than Words just around the corner, we’re shining a light on the incredible work of the Oxfordshire+ B Local. Working in collaboration with Oxfordshire Homeless Movement (OHM), the team is holding an inspiring workshop at the festival centred around how B Corps and other businesses can collectively create 10x the positive impact for our communities in 2025. 💡 Oxford is known for its beauty and heritage, but did you know it’s also the 2nd most unequal city in the UK? Housing insecurity and homelessness are serious issues facing the community, made worse by the cost-of-living crisis. Together, we can change that. This session at Louder Than Words will dive into the issue of homelessness across the UK, using Oxfordshire as an example, and guided by leading local homelessness charities – Homeless Oxfordshire, Connection Support, and Oxfordshire Homeless Movement (OHM). This week is homelessness week. According to the Australian Human Rights Commission, every night, roughly 1 in 200 Australians find themselves without a safe, secure or affordable place to sleep. Everyone has the right to an adequate standard of living including adequate food, water and housing and to the continuous improvement of living conditions. In 2021, a federal parliamentary inquiry highlighted three key areas for reform: 1. Prevention and early intervention, the “most effective and cost-efficient measures to address homelessness”. 2. “Housing First” approach, moving people experiencing long-term, chronic or recurring homelessness into supported housing as quickly as possible. 3. Reducing the shortfall in social and affordable housing. As an individual we can feel powerless against such a crisis, however there are many organisations fighting to support homeless people everyday. This week I am dedicated to finding ways to volunteer my time or resources to supporting this cause.
