Nike: Just Discount it? Over the past few quarters one of our biggest successes has been detecting the slowdown in organic demand for Nike.  As opposed to attempting to extrapolate revenue trends from credit cards for a global brand with complex wholesale relationships, our process looks more directly at messaging from management. Through our promotional ensemble we help investors understand changes in email discount intensity not just directly from Nike, but assess new discount campaigns from key wholesale partners such as Foot Locker, Dick's Sporting Good and others.. When key wholesale accounts are struggling to move product, they do what is fastest and easiest: email discounts.  To end September our measure of the implied/effective discount in Nike's email campaigns rose to over 11%, higher than any other recent period outside of Black Friday.  Our process detected escalating discount language within large campaigns and alerted investors prior to Nike reporting a sharp 11% decline in North America revenue. #nike #promotions #alternativedata #discounting #footlocker

Good news for retailers. Nike is not the only big brand out there that tried to focus more on DTC by limiting or completely pulling their products from partner retailers only to realize the error of their ways. The consumer market can be a harsh truth. What Nike learned is that brand loyalty is not as strong as it used to be, especially younger generations are always looking for the next best brand or product which is harder to find in a retail store that only sells one brand.
