Following on from the last post regarding the application process, here’s a great example of how it can be done in such a way that generates enthusiasm in those applying for the post. Great example of clear, realistic expectations. SOM would do well to eat a bit of humble pie and follow the example.

Continuing our #EmployeeSpotlight series, we catch up with Architectural Assistant Mathilde Leréec Le Bricquir. Originally from France, Mathilde joined us in 2020, having completed her Masters in Aberdeen. Recently, she passed her Part III Examination in Professional Practice and Management. 🔸 What led you to pursue a career in architecture? "I was always attracted to the arts and design and studied applied arts for a year before turning to architecture. I find architecture sits at the crossroads of many of my subjects of interest, including history, sociology, art and science." 🔸 What area of architecture particularly interests you? "I enjoy studying the evolution of architecture through the years and across the world as it’s so representative of a culture and society. Throughout my studies and my work, I’ve developed an interest in sustainable designs, particularly in conservation and historical environments." 🔸 What is the best part of your job? "The best part of my job is considering what a client is feeding us through their brief and then creating something unique and special for them, seeing them project themselves into the design and trying to exceed their expectations. It’s incredibly rewarding." 🔸 How has your career developed and been supported during your time with ABD? "I started here as a graduate straight out of uni with no work experience in the UK and just before lockdown. ABD supported me through what could be called a rough first year! I’ve since had many opportunities to develop in my role and was able to successfully sit my Part 3 professional practice examination last year with the whole team behind me." 🔸 Can you describe what tasks you perform on a typical working day? "On most days I’ll spend time preparing designs and drawings for client reviews or applications. I spend a lot of time on concepts, drawings, design statements and presentation material. On other days I can have three spreadsheets open, putting together project programmes on large commercial projects, trying to capture every task for design team members, lead times and deadlines, or managing information sharing and communication between all consultants." 🔸 What are you working on at the moment? "I’m currently working on a few domestic projects, almost all are listed buildings within conservation areas in St Andrews and Broughty Ferry. They bring a specific set of challenges and involve negotiation with local authorities and clients, concluding in creative ways to alter an existing building. I’m also working on commercial new-builds within the food & drink sector with large design teams involved, as well as some commercial conversions and renovations, mainly for hospitality and offices within Dundee and Angus. All these projects are at various stages, which makes for an interesting variety in my working week!" View details of more of our team at: https://lnkd.in/eB_AR2gs

University is a stepping stone; but true leverage is the quality of experience... Newly graduated landscape architecture students should not rely solely on the prestige of their university to land a job, but rather focus on gaining practical experience that will give them an advantage over competitors when applying to reputable firms. Here's why: 1. The landscape architecture field is highly competitive, with many graduates vying for limited positions. Having a degree from a top university is not enough to stand out. 2. Reputable firms prioritize candidates with relevant experience, such as internships or part-time jobs in the field. These opportunities allow students to develop their skills, build a portfolio, and make industry connections. 3. Practical experience demonstrates to employers that a candidate can apply their knowledge to real-world projects. This is often more valuable than the reputation of the university alone. 4. Graduates should aim to develop a diverse skill set, including proficiency in design software, construction techniques, and project management. This versatility makes them more attractive to potential employers. 5. Networking and professional development are crucial in the landscape architecture field. Joining organizations like the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) can provide access to job listings, training opportunities, and industry connections. 6. Employers want to see that you're committed to your profession and willing to put in the effort to learn and grow. Practical experience demonstrates your dedication to the field. 7. Enhances job prospects: Having practical experience can give you an edge over other candidates when applying to reputable firms. It shows that you're proactive, motivated, and willing to learn To gain practical experience, consider the following: 1. Internships: Apply for internships with reputable firms, government agencies, or non-profit organizations. 2. Volunteer work: Offer your services to local parks, community gardens, or environmental organizations. 3. Freelance projects: Take on small projects or collaborations with other students or professionals to build your portfolio and skills. 4. Participate in design competitions: Join design competitions or hackathons to showcase your skills and creativity. 5. Seek mentorship: Find a mentor who can guide you, provide feedback, and introduce you to industry professionals. In summary, while the reputation of a university can open doors, newly graduated landscape architecture students must prioritize gaining practical experience, developing a diverse skill set, and networking to stand out in a competitive job market and secure positions at reputable firms. #justathought As an architects and Interior Designer, How appropriate is it for people to keep posting every small bit of information on social media through reels? We’re sharing everything, breaking down every little detail, which is part of a learning process. But in the future, this could be dangerous for us. People who have no experience are watching these videos and learning, but they're only getting half the information because we can’t explain everything in these short clips. Yet, these viewers consider themselves experts just by watching. So, in the coming future, why would anyone need to hire a consultant? They will believe they’ve learned everything from these videos, so why would they call a professional? I think every designer, architect, and civil engineer should seriously think about this. Is it really necessary to share so much information with the public on social media? #architect #beingarchitect #archdaily #interior #architecturaldigest #ssdassociates #architecture
