If you care for pets on a stray hold, pre-adoption helps you make sure you're not missing out on interested adopters during the holding period. You might assume that only small, highly desirable dogs get pre-adopted, and they do! But Memphis Animal Services started pre-adoptions in 2019 and found that most of the dogs getting pre-adopted were actually medium dogs over 6 months old - the exact population most in need at their shelter. Are you interested in starting pre-adoptions at your org? Here's a step-by-step how-to for getting started!

Remmi's List: New August Lineup! Ahsoka, Sharkbait, Iverson, Skippy, Jack, Winston, RoRo, and BeBe are all looking for a a little break from shelter life. Can you help? #RemmisList is a list of animals in our care who are in the biggest need of #shorttermfoster homes. Studies show that giving a dog or cat a break from the #shelter environment for even a night or two significantly reduces stress which helps to make them more adoptable in the long run. Remmi’s list is made up of our #dogsandcats here at the Angels of Assisi shelter who most need some time out of the #kennels. These animals are either #senior, #longtermresidents, in need of medical care, in dire need of a #mentalhealth break from the shelter, or all of the above. Our staff will even provide training on medication administration for our #specialneedsanimals. While the time in our shelter is temporary for all of its residents, Remmi’s list aims to highlight those who could use a vacation the most. If you’re interested in becoming a short-term foster parent to an animal on Remmi’s List, please contact foster@angelsofassisi.org. Street Hearts BG is at full capacity and CLOSED for new admissions. Every week, we are inundated with requests to help dogs in need, often from locations far outside our catchment area of Dryanovo. We hate to turn these animals away, but we have no choice. When we explain our situation, we are sometimes met with rudeness and even abuse. Please understand, our shelter has a legal limit of 70 dogs. If we exceed this limit and face an inspection, we risk being shut down completely. That would mean no help for any dogs at all. Bulgaria is a large country with a massive street dog problem. Street Hearts BG is a small NGO doing everything we can, but we cannot carry this burden alone. Everyone must step up. Neutering dogs is one of the most effective ways to prevent unwanted litters. Despite offering a free neutering programme, last week we still ended up taking in yet another litter of dumped puppies. This is unacceptable. This is not just our responsibility. It is a collective issue that requires collective action. We must all commit to responsible pet ownership and take advantage of neutering programmes. If not, the suffering of dogs will continue, and we will never solve this problem. We implore you to be part of the solution. Ignoring this crisis and pushing the burden onto us is not the answer. Work with us, not against us, to create a better future for all dogs in Bulgaria. Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the legislation in December 2022, but the new law doesn't take effect until December 2024. Puppies, kittens and bunnies can no longer be sold in pet shops. December 31, 2024, is just around the corner. Has any major organization made a public statement about the well-being of animals that are unsold on this day, the last day of December? One year ago, I asked this question in the same forum just out of curiosity. If anybody has been putting a plan together and has not received a solid response, I shall ask the question again. Is anyone aware of any major organization or rescue organization? If our rescues and shelters are red-lining and beyond capacity, where will all the puppies, kittens, and rabbits in New York State end up? What is the plan to ensure the well-being of unsold dogs, kittens, puppies, and rabbits left in stores on December 31, and why has this plan not been made public so volunteers/fosters can offer to help? If our rescues and shelters are overflowing and beyond capacity, where will all the puppies, kittens, and rabbits in New York State end up? #pets #petrescue

Tomorrow is Puppy Mill Awareness Day, dedicated to raising awareness about the inhumane conditions in puppy mills and promoting the adoption of rescue dogs and the support of reputable breeders. Puppy mills prioritize profit over the well-being of animals, often keeping dogs in cramped, unsanitary conditions with inadequate care. It's estimated that there are around 10,000 puppy mills in the United States, producing over 2 million puppies annually(https://lnkd.in/e4dGtnXh) (https://lnkd.in/e4aQDiEM). To observe Puppy Mill Awareness Day, consider adopting your next pet from a shelter or rescue organization. If you choose to buy from a breeder, ensure they are reputable, allow you to visit their facilities, and have undertaken health and genetic screening appropriate to the breed. A gold standard for reputable breeders is a guarantee that if for some reason you are unable to keep your adoptee, they will welcome the dog back into their home at any point in its lifetime. This helps reduce the demand for puppy mills and ensures healthier and well-cared-for pets. Supporting local shelters and rescue organizations through financial donations or by providing supplies is another impactful action. These resources help them continue their vital work in rescuing and rehabilitating animals from puppy mills. Additionally, volunteering your time at a local shelter to assist with dog walking, cleaning, and other tasks can make a significant difference in the lives of these animals. For more detailed information and resources on puppy mills, you can visit the Humane Society's Puppy Mill Fact Sheets and Resources or United Against Puppy Mills' Puppy Mill Awareness Day page: https://lnkd.in/eUvuitNQ By taking these steps, we can collectively work towards ending the cruelty of puppy mills and ensuring a better future for all dogs. 🐶❤️ #PuppyMillAwarenessDay #AdoptDontShop #EndPuppyMills #ReputableBreeders #DogRescue #VirginiaDogTrainer #DogTrainer #JoyfulDog #TimetoTrain
