Headed to Kansas City to spend quality time with some of the world's finest SWAT officers, SWAT medics, and barbecue at the National Tactical Officers Association's Law Enforcement Operations Conference and Trade Show. As usual, I'll be pushing the envelope in my presentation but the room will be packed so people are apparently buying what I'm selling. "Resolving Burning Barricades: When the Structure Catches Fire" Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams are deservedly known for not only being highly trained and specially equipped but also adaptable and resourceful during extremely dynamic situations. However, when a structure fire occurs during a critical incident, it adds a layer of complexity most SWAT teams are ill-prepared for, consequently leading to operational delays that make mission success that much more difficult to achieve. To counter such circumstances, this presentation will describe what extraordinary resources fire service personnel, apparatus, and equipment can be within tactical environments and how they can be safely and efficiently utilized to mitigate a variety of unconventional challenges.

#FrancisScottKeyBridge in Baltimore, MD collapses in the middle of the night due to collision with a container ship. As a US Navy surface warfare officer, this is the one of the worst things that could ever happen. We spend tens and sometimes even hundreds of hours ensuring our #navigation track is safe especially as we are entering harbor understanding the effects of wind and current on our ship along our track. This is absolutely tragic and my heart goes out to all the families of the loved ones affected by this tragic accident. Not only #Baltimore, but the entire #DMV area, east coast, and many parts of #UnitedStated and the world will be affected via 2nd, 3rd, and 4th order effects of supply chain issues this will cause. While no foul play is currently suspected, as a #cybersecurity professional this brings to light just how critical and potentially catastrophic something happening to one of the hundreds of thousands of ships that transit in and out of port daily. These behemoths of human engineering and ingenuity are incredibly #vulnerable. If one was able to manipulate the COG (course over ground) vs heading off a ship weighing tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds as it were entering port, this could be catastrophic. I think about how many times on a US Navy #destroyer I navigated under the #Coronadobridge in #SanDiego. On USS Hopper(DDG-70), we passed under many bridges on deployment and even got to pass under #SanFrancisco’s famous #GoldenGateBridge to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the commissioning of USS Hopper.
