On May 19th, 2024, we celebrate the 105th anniversary of a pivotal moment in Turkish history. On this day, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the visionary leader and founder of the Republic of Turkey, initiated a profound transformation that forever altered the course of the nation's history. Gathering the people around a big purpose: to reclaim freedom and embark on a journey of modernization. Despite facing immense challenges, Atatürk's unwavering commitment to this purpose motivated individuals across Turkey to work towards a common goal. This sense of purpose enabled a national drive for education, industrialization, and societal reform, leading to significant advancements in various sectors and laying the foundation for modern Turkey.

Tomorrow marks the International Day of Peace 🕊️ This year, we celebrate its 25th anniversary under the theme "Cultivating a Culture of Peace." As UNESCO's Constitution reminds us, "wars begin in the minds of men, and it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed." emphasizing the vital role of education, starting with children and communities, in fostering peace. 105 years ago, on May 19, 1919, we respectfully commemorate Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who laid the foundations of today's secular and democratic Republic of Turkey by resurrecting the Ottoman Empire, which was described as the "sick man Ottoman" all over the world when it was about to be divided into pieces by France, Italy, Greece and England, by resurrecting the Ottoman Empire from its dead ashes, by adopting the Arabic culture and religion, by finding the first alphabet in the world that migrated from Asia, and by returning the Turkish nation to its original settings.

In the century since Rome's defeat of the Seleucid Empire in the 180s BC, the East was dominated by the rise of new empires: Parthia, Armenia and Pontus, each vying to recreate the glories of the Persian Empire. By the 80s BC, the Pontic Empire of Mithridates had grown so bold that it invaded and annexed the whole of Rome's eastern empire and occupied Greece itself. As Rome emerged from the devastating effects of the First Civil War, a new breed of general emerged, eager to re-assert Roman military dominance and carve out a fresh empire in the east, treading in the footsteps of Alexander. This work analyses the military campaigns and battles between a revitalized Rome and the various powers of the eastern Mediterranean hinterland, which ultimately heralded a new phase in Roman imperial expansion and reshaped the ancient East.

The Battle of the Volturnus marked the end of the Ostrogothic Kingdom's resistance in Italy. It was the final chapter in a long and grueling conflict that had spanned nearly two decades. Following up with yesterday's post... ultimately, the superior coordination and strategy of the Byzantine forces, along with their numerical advantage, began to turn the tide of battle in their favor. King Teia, leading from the front, fell in combat. His death dealt a significant blow to Ostrogothic morale. With their leader gone and their forces increasingly overwhelmed, the Ostrogoths faced a difficult choice. The battle ended with the Byzantine victory, and the remnants of the Ostrogothic army retreated. The defeat at the Volturnus River effectively ended the Ostrogothic monarchy in Italy. With the Gothic War concluded, Italy was reintegrated into the Eastern Roman Empire, marking the reassertion of Roman authority in the region. The conflict had left Italy scarred and transformed, with cities in ruins and populations depleted. The legacy of the Gothic War continued to influence Italy's history, contributing to the transition from late antiquity to the early Middle Ages.
