The Vietnamese perspective: SEA games champion ends up with zero Olympic medals. The article goes into detail on athlete to medal ratios, medal tally per sport, etc. It’s a wake up call for Vietnam — but very relevant for the Philippines to also invest in ‘unique’ events. ‘Another effective strategy for Southeast Asian countries could be focusing on events with fewer competition or less interest from other countries.’ https://lnkd.in/gwkasthc

In 2025, the fate of padel in the Olympics should be decided. All fans of padel hope that one day it will become an Olympic sport. It is clear that it will not be at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, but there is hope for its inclusion in the Brisbane 2032 games. Meanwhile, any sport to become an Olympic sport must meet certain criteria (these can be found in International Olympic Committee (IOC) regulations: It must have an international set of rules and a governing organization. The international organization must abide by the IOC rules. Sport must follow and implement the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) system. Sport should not use machines or any devices with motors. It is easy to understand that all of the above criteria are met by Padel. However, there is another requirement that it does not currently fulfill: the sport must be practiced in 75 countries on four continents for men and 40 countries on three continents for women. The official FIP website now lists 71 countries in the list of national federations, with Europe and the Americas in complete dominance. In Africa, there are federations in three countries - Egypt, Senegal and Tunisia, and for the whole of Oceania - only in Australia and New Zealand. This, however, gives hope that somewhere else 4 more federations can be opened in a year.

Team China's performance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Summer Games was record-breaking. Athletes from the Chinese mainland took home 91 medals, their greatest achievement in an overseas Olympic Games. Global audiences consider this feat a reflection of China's overall progress, showcasing the nation's ability to compete and excel in a highly competitive global arena. The country is no longer just dominant in a few select traditional disciplines such as diving, table tennis and weightlifting. It is becoming a well-rounded athletic powerhouse, staging successful performances across a wide range of sports. Aside from the pride and glory of sporting success, this accomplishment may carry profound economic implications that could shape the future of China's economy and its global standing. My op-ed on Beijing Review.

From a humble start with just five golds in 1988, China's Olympic journey has been a tale of relentless dedication and progress. Excelling in sports like diving, shooting, gymnastics, table tennis, badminton, and weightlifting, China consistently finished in the top three of the Olympic medal table since Sydney 2000. The 2008 Beijing Olympics saw China top the medal table with 48 golds. In the just concluded Games, China tied with the U.S. on gold medals, showcasing its growing dominance in global sports. Its success can be attributed to the following: 1) Cultural emphasis on discipline and hard work: Chinese culture values discipline, hard work, and perseverance, which are essential qualities for athletes striving for excellence. This cultural background fosters a strong work ethic among Chinese athletes. 2) State-sponsored athletic programs: China's centralized approach to sports development, with early talent identification and specialized sports schools, allows them to systematically cultivate a large pool of elite athletes. 3) Focus on specific sports: China strategically prioritizes sports where they have a competitive advantage or a strong tradition, maximizing their chances of winning medals. These factors, combined with relentless dedication and progress, have contributed to China's impressive Olympic journey from 1988 to 2024.

Is padel an Olympic sport? Requirements to be an Olympic sport: 1. It must officially have an international federation. Essentially, it means there must be an institution or organisation that regulates the game on a worldwide level. In addition, the governing federation must meet the ethical requirements of the Olympic Committee and regularly participate in tournaments and events. 2. It must comply with the World Anti-Doping Code. This is a key factor in gaining Olympic recognition. The international federation of the sport in question must adhere to the strict WADA code. 3. No motor equipment is allowed. Sports included in the Olympic Games are ones in which athletes are not aided by any type of motor equipment. 4. There is a minimum number of countries in which the sport is played. For a sport to be included in the Olympics, it needs to be played in a minimum of 75 countries and 4 continents in the men’s category, and 40 countries and 3 continents in the women's category. #padel #olympics #futureofsport #soundmindinsoundbody

32 Gold medals for China in Olympics, most gold by any country so far. Wondering how China is number one in the Olympics? It's not a coincidence. China’s success in producing a large number of Olympic medalists can be attributed to several key factors: 1. Early Talent Identification: Children with potential are often scouted from schools and funneled into specialized sports schools. 2. Intensive Training Programs: These programs are state-run and highly disciplined, with athletes dedicating most of their time to perfecting their skills. 3. State Support and Resources: The Chinese government heavily invests in sports, providing top-notch facilities, coaching, and financial support to athletes. 4. Specialization: China often focuses on specific sports where they have historically been strong or where there is a higher probability of winning medals, such as gymnastics, diving, and table tennis. 5. National Pride and Motivation: Athletes are often driven by a strong sense of national pride. 6. Long-Term Development: China employs a long-term approach to athlete development, nurturing them over many years with a focus on international competitions like the Olympics. These combined strategies contribute to China’s consistent success in the Olympics, making it one of the top countries in the medal tally each time. #Olympics #inspiration #Motivation #PersonalDevelopment
