I love the idea that Emma speaks about how a love for Latin and language helped her... understand 'people'. And that has helped her across her career as a leader. One can succeed in so many different ways. And finding work that you love really allows you to operate from a place of strength. And that is so wonderful. So many of us, may not have 'master-plans'. Particularly 'master-plans' that are strategic. In fact the future is changing so fast, that having a master-plan will become less and less relevant. What will be relevant? Excellence and learning. Excellence unlocks new opportunities. And its hard to have excellence unless we can find ways to enjoy what we do. Hence, the start... discovering what really drives you. And then giving it your all.
“Worry less about having a strategy for your career and worry a lot about loving the job you are in and being the best at it... that's how you unlock opportunity.” GSK CEO and Microsoft board member Emma Walmsley never had a master plan for where her career path would take her. In the latest episode of The Path, Emma tells me how she let curiosity and a sense of adventure guide her from multiple roles in one the world’s biggest cosmetics companies to taking on the leadership of a pharmaceutical giant.
