Today is the day! A day 100 years in the making. A day filled with everything we have put into it: hard work, sweat, tears, determination, passion and heart. It is a day of joy. A day to celebrate science and research, volunteers and survivors. A day to celebrate all people everywhere whose lives we improve. A day to celebrate every member of the American Heart Association family. Today marks 100 years since the founding of the American Heart Association on June 10, 1924. CPR. Pacemakers. Heart transplants. Stents. Clot-busting drugs. Congenital heart defect repairs. Treatment. Prevention. Guidelines. Precision Medicine. Our organization has made all of them possible, and in doing so, we’ve cut cardiovascular mortality in half. Our Second Century will be a time of incredible breakthroughs, many unimaginable today, guided by our vision of “advancing health and hope for everyone, everywhere.” And we can’t wait to see where we’ll go and who we’ll be, 100 years from now.

On October 6th, 1903, the New York Times published an editorial that stated humans would be able to fly in “one to ten million years” of continuous innovation and effort. On December 17th, 1903, the Wright Brothers took to the skies. All that to say, innovation moves faster than any of us can imagine. It can also move quite slowly. The history of CPR is a great example. It’s only been about 66 years since the advent of cardiopulmonary resuscitation as we know it today. 66 years before that, though, one doctor was just realizing the importance of chest compressions by performing them on his canine subjects. In fact, if you review the entire history of CPR at the link here, you’ll see how various scientists and innovators each discovered a piece of the modern CPR process. My team’s infographic has all the highlights, with some eye-popping historical info. And the article is a great lunch break read! Jan. 31, 2024—A recent survey conducted by the American Heart Association (AHA) to mark its hundredth anniversary has revealed that increased awareness of the need for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) positively influences a bystander's willingness to respond in a cardiac emergency situation. The study was carried out during the fall of 2023 and showed an increase from 30% in 2021 to a 35% confidence level among respondents on their ability to perform CPR when required. However, only about two-fifths of those surveyed were familiar with conventional CPR and just under one-fourth with hands-only CPR.

Innovative Trauma Care Inc. (iTClamp) #itclamp was designed to be easily applied for hemorrhage control of the scalp, neck and other compressible extremity wounds. The face, head and neck are tricky, and deceptively simple and can cause first responders to spend an unnecessary amount of time on scene. Anything that can be done to speed up transport to bright lights and cold steel is ideal....Especially TRAINING, TRAINING, TRAINING.

Midface trauma is tricky to manage in an austere pre hospital setting. To add to their existing tools at Edale Mountain Rescue Team , we ran a facial trauma workshop geared towards primary management till Medevac can take place . Thanks to Louise Mortimer we could introduce the team to the use of Rapid Rhino 900 and 550 with hands on modules supervised by Ben Cooper , myself & @Mike cole ( All World Extreme Medicine faculty)
