Exciting developments in North American resource security! 🌍 The U.S. funding Canadian mining projects for critical minerals marks a strategic shift to enhance supply chain resilience and reduce dependency on foreign sources. This historic move underscores a joint effort to bolster national security and strengthen regional control of vital resources. 💎🇺🇸🇨🇦 #ResourceSecurity #USCanadaPartnership
The U.S. military has, for the first time in generations, spent public money on minerals projects inside Canada: nearly $15 million to mine and process copper, gold, graphite and cobalt in Quebec and the Northwest Territories. It might not be the last: Officials expect additional cross-border announcements under the more than half-billion-dollar U.S. program (U.S. Defense Production Act). "The U.S. military has, for the first time in generations, spent public money on minerals projects inside Canada: nearly $15 million US to mine and process copper, gold, graphite and cobalt in Quebec and the Northwest Territories. It might not be the last: Officials expect additional cross-border announcements under the more than half-billion-dollar U.S. program. These minerals are vital ingredients in an endless array of civilian and military products — including medicine, batteries, electronics, engines, cars, planes, drones and munitions. The context, this time, is China. ... "The U.S. military needs these materials for combat and for national-security purposes.… It's an important move." The U.S. started examining dozens of Canadian proposals in 2022. It requested product pitches, then more detailed applications, then it finally picked two winners, at which point the Canadian government contributed millions of its own. ... ... in a national-security crisis, the U.S. military could demand these supplies — say in the event of a severe trade war, or worse, a shooting war in the Asia-Pacific. That's made clear in a clause in Canada's own version of the Defence Production Act, which gives the government the power to buy raw materials on behalf of a NATO ally. In other words, the U.S. military could leap to the front of the customer line." https://lnkd.in/ecRnWEsj

The Ukraine war has exposed a critical shortage of tungsten, essential for defense. With China and Russia controlling 90% of global supply, the urgency to secure North American sources has never been greater. As demand for munitions rises and geopolitical risks grow, the U.S. and its allies are focusing on diversifying away from China-dominated supply chains. This presents a unique opportunity for North American tungsten producers to strengthen defense capabilities and enhance supply chain resilience. At K2 Capital, we are actively investing in this sector, supporting high-potential brownfield assets and seasoned management teams to meet this growing demand. The future is bright for those positioned in this critical space. #Tungsten #CriticalMinerals #Defense #Geopolitics #SupplyChain #Mining #Investing https://lnkd.in/gyZdcgU7

For those in the defence, aerospace and green tech sectors take note! China is again dumping REE onto world markets simply in an effort to disincentivize and or halt production. They will then do a 180 and halt shipments- as they have in the past- The absolute necessity of continentally/NATO secure supply is now a front burner issue. Yes it will cost more and it will train a new generation of western specialists. Yes this onshoring will be inherently inflationary, but consider the cost if precision munitions can’t be made?!?! It is time for governments to help with bonds to enable the truly huge cap ex required while we also need NATO primes to step up, pay up and commit to multi year offtake agreements, at WESTERN price points. While I am at it, change the metrics so this spending can be fully counted towards NATO targets. Cheers, cherish your loved ones Phil

Defence manufacturing requires metal products like nickel-aluminum bronze, Beryllium copper and copper-nickel for these and related applications, which include aircraft components, anti-missile defense systems, rockets, explosives detection equipment, missile guidance equipment, communications and satellite systems, as well as other highly specialized defence products and military equipment. This is a perfect example of when the government needs to step in. The Commonwealth should pay for the mining, processing and stockpiling of a years worth of Nickel (and strategic nickel alloys) to supply Australian defence industries and AUKUS allies. If the commercials of this operation are problematic…they can still mothball it then. Whats the worst that can happen ? Australian industry has access to a huge stockpile of cheap nickel ?

America Should Rebuild the National Defense Stockpile America's reliance on foreign critical minerals, particularly from competitors like China, poses a significant threat to national security. The National Defense Stockpile (NDS), created to safeguard essential materials for military and civilian use, has been depleted due to de-prioritization, competing requirements, and overreliance on foreign supply chains. The recent restrictions on antimony exports by China highlight the vulnerability of the U.S. supply chain. To counter this, Congress must restore funding to the NDS, increase stockpile levels, and invest in alternatives to critical minerals. Rebuilding the NDS is essential for ensuring America's defense capabilities and technological advancements amid great power competition. https://lnkd.in/eWVbm72k M2i Global Corporation is an engineering, research, and services company that brings together people, technology, and solutions from across government, business, not-for-profits, and academia to provide guaranteed access and availability to critical minerals and metals for the purpose of national defense and economic security. Article Review by Medina Environmental Consulting & Solutions Wischer 2033. As America rearms, it needs minerals, lots of them. West Point Modern War Institute - The US needs to replenish diminished weapons stocks. - Munitions are mineral intensive. - Iron, Aluminum, Steel, and Copper are particularly important. - The DoD is committed to to an all electric non-tactical vehicle fleet by 2035. - Electric vehicles require Lithium and Graphite. - Also, Nickel, Cobalt, and Manganese. - There is competition for these minerals from commercial interests. - Recommendations include stockpiling key minerals, supporting domestic mining operations, and recycling. From an Environmental Perspective - Separation approaches may be applicable for recycling processes - Working with domestic mining to control releases. - Future: Recovery of valuable metals from water/wastewater/ sludge treatment with high mineral content.
