Hey Peeps, you know I post good news & keep troubles to myself. But I have been weeping all year because nothing means more to me than #rescue, and due to a filing glitch, Tails of Joy has been "disallowed" from fundraising everywhere; facebook, Go Fund Me, Network for Good, etc. We re-filed the corrected form MONTHS ago but gov't takes its sweet time. Mind you this is not about taxes or filing taxes, we are spotless in that area. We have a Platinum rating for transparency and accountability from Guidestar. It was a non-profit yearly filing form (rrf-1) that our treasurer accidentally left one line blank on. For that we have been punished for months and raised almost NO money this year. But so far we have given out approximately $50,000 from our savings. So, no facebook birthday wish but I do have a Paypal Birthday Wish. I loved Jessica Chen's perspective this week on how to answer  “what do you do for work?” Too often, we default to our title, and role. "I'm the VP of X at Y company/organization". She shared this formula, “You know how (state issue)? So what I do is (share solution). For example (give proof).” It's a door opener to further conversation. Here's mine. "You know how people are carrying less and less cash these days? I help non-profits and companies collect donations and tips through in-person contactless payments. For example, our solution has helped the Salvation Army collect over $7 Million dollars over the last 4 years to allow them to help even more people in need." When I have my initial consultation with a prospect, one of the questions I ask is, "What are your goals?" I encourage not only talking about business goals, but personal goals as well since our businesses usually play a vital role in helping us achieve our personal goals. When I started my firm, I asked myself the same question. One of the pillars I wanted to build my business on was giving. Before I even had any clients, I decided I would donate 5% of my revenue. For a couple years I donated to Operation Underground Railroad (OUR) but last year I made the switch to Doors to Freedom. It is also an organization that helps victims of trafficking but they are local to my area. I love what they stand for and how they help rehabilitate and care for victims. It's been really humbling each quarter to review my revenue and make my donation knowing that I wouldn't normally be able to donate or donating the amount I'm able to without my business. Here are some Tips & Tricks to help you get started: --Start with one area/room at a time --Start with the items on the floor and then move to surfaces --For any items that don’t belong in this area/room, sort them into 5 categories: 1). donate/sell 2). trash/recycle 3). belong in someone’s room or to someone outside of the home 4). ‘maybe’ items 5). paper/documents/memorabilia What you are left with now in this room are your ‘keep’ items.
