We’re excited to share that Katie Castelo, P.Eng from Isherwood Geostructural will be presenting at the DFI conference alongside Shawna Munn, P.Eng and Dave Wiley, P.Eng! They’ll be presenting their paper, "Performance Based Design: Why Aren’t We Leveraging It to Its Full Potential? Managing Opportunity, Safety, and Contract Risk". Here’s a sneak peek at the abstract: The Observational Method plays a vital role in subsurface engineering, but current contract methods don’t fully capitalize on its potential. The paper explores the benefits of performance-based design, drawing on 50 years of case histories to showcase how these methodologies can enhance safety, manage risks, and drive economic benefits. It also addresses the risks associated with specification-driven design parameters and proposes tendering approaches to better integrate performance-based design into contracts while protecting both owners and contractors. We hope you have the opportunity to attend their presentation at the 49th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations in Aurora, Colorado!

March is not just another month at Binnie —it's a celebration of engineering excellence! National Engineering & Geoscience Month, Canada's largest tribute to the world of engineering, applauds the incredible work of engineers and the critical role they play in our society. Presented by Engineers Canada, this annual campaign resonates with the theme, "There's a place for you in engineering,” which celebrates the diversity of thought, opportunities, and people that make up the engineering profession. Today, our goal is to start a discussion that can bring the role of engineers to the forefront this month. Some questions to consider include: 💡 How can we use engineering to contribute solutions to today’s biggest challenges? 💡 ️What do we want our profession to look like in the future? Comment below!
