I read a comment on LinkedIn the other day comfortably sharing how their job application should take a candidate roughly 45 minutes to fill out. Now imagine being on the job market, knowing old research shows it takes an average of 21 to *80* job applications to get a single job. And I imagine the # of applications each candidate has to fill out is only increasing amidst industry layoffs. Earlier this year, Ashby even released new findings that inbound applications tripled in 2024. And our latest report published just today, which overall focuses on Offer Acceptance Rates, shows that inbound as a source of hires is rapidly increasing for business roles (see chart). So no matter what way you look at it, candidates are applying to more roles than ever before while stressed about securing a job. Requiring an extensive, 45-minute application as the very first step seems like a great way to miss out on qualified talent and highlight a lack of empathy in the current market. Even 4 years ago when looking for a job, anything that wanted me to fill in more than 3 questions went straight into “tab closed” 😬. I can’t even begin to express how frustrating it can be when there is a whole exam of questions for you to fill even before the 1st stage! However, with a recent job having over 500 applications in 3 weeks, I was the first one to cry out for introducing some qualifying questions 🥲 My advice would be to keep those quick and reflecting what your job wants from people and avoid character probing or any form of cognitive test

Adverse selection incoming: the 45-min application process will probably weed out the very candidates the company will claim to be looking for (“top talent who have plenty of options”)

5 out of the 7 roles I recently hired were from inbound. It has been so refreshing to find and engage with talent this way!

45 minutes???!!! 🤯 No way. I didn't see that post. The application and the scheduling parts of an interview process should be the most efficient in my opinion. If I were applying somewhere, I would not spend 45 minutes filling out a questionnaire.

😳Many job seekers are balancing additional obligations: parenting, caring for parents, long commutes, and everyday life ! 45 minutes is a good chunk of time and can actually prevent great candidates from applying. Employers please make applying more effortless!
