We're all about empowering ability. Scope have a really interesting 'social model of disability' which explains thing really succinctly, we think: “People are disabled by barriers in society, not by their impairment or difference. Barriers can be physical, like buildings not having accessible toilets. Or they can be caused by people's attitudes to difference, like assuming disabled people can't do certain things.” What's your take on it? #Awarenessmatters #Senseabilitymatters #empoweringability 📷 Image description: White background with a quote in purple text saying "People are disabled by barriers in society, not by their impairment or difference" and the Sense Ability Matters purple and yellow logo on the bottom.

Empowering individuals navigating chronic inflammation | Founder @InflamMed | Tackling Health Inequalities @St Christopher's | Storyteller
🔍 Did you know? Many disabled individuals are eager to work but face significant systemic barriers. 🚨 Recent rhetoric around "sick note culture" oversimplifies and potentially exacerbates the challenges faced by those with chronic illnesses and disabilities, making meaningful employment even more inaccessible. 👉 What can be done? Here are actionable changes we could advocate for: - Ease the process for claiming benefits to support those in need without unnecessary hurdles. - Simplify access to sick notes, acknowledging that health fluctuations are a common reality, especially for those with chronic inflammation and chronic illnesses. - Enhance workplace flexibility to accommodate diverse health needs and capabilities. - Bolster support systems to provide genuine employment opportunities. 📈 "Only one in ten out-of-work disabled people receive help finding employment each year, yet two in ten express a desire to work." (Source: Learning and Work Institute) 🤔 And what about those not claiming benefits? Many with invisible disabilities don't claim benefits due to lack of awareness, complex applications, fear and stigma, to name a few. Additionally, others struggle to stay in work without adequate in-work support for similar reasons. We risk worsening the wellbeing of our society if these issues are not addressed. 🌐 Let’s push for empowering policies, not restrictive ones. Join the conversation and help advocate for a society that understands and supports its members. #DisabilityInclusion #ChronicIllness #HealthcareReform #WorkplaceFlexibility #InflamMed

15 million disabled people missing out on social care support 😟 Today, I came across an alarming statistic from Healthwatch UK: 1.5 million disabled people could be missing out on crucial social care support. This finding is deeply concerning and highlights the urgent need for systemic improvements. As someone who's passionate about inclusivity and social equity, I find this statistic to have struck a chord with me. Accessing proper social care is a fundamental right, yet so many are left without the support they need to live fulfilling lives. We must advocate for these individuals, ensuring that they receive the resources and assistance they deserve. I encourage everyone to stay informed and support initiatives that aim to bridge this gap. Together, we can drive change and make a meaningful impact on the lives of millions. What are your thoughts on how we can address this issue? Let's discuss it! #SocialCare #InclusionMatters #HealthEquity #vetrorecruitment #vetro

Hello LinkedIn Network! This Wednesday is the The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Annual Meeting where resolution proposals will be voted on. A short while back, many of you showed incredible (!!) support, helping us get 50 AIA Member signatures in order to submit two resolutions to the board: 1. An expansion of the EDI definition to include missing underrepresented groups and 2. Providing virtual access options for major events (Annual Conference and Women's Leadership Summit). If you are voting, or know anyone who is a delegate and will be voting, please let them know about these resolutions and why it is important to vote YES. Here are some facts on why this is so important: -27% of the adult US population is disabled (https://lnkd.in/gdPjeDkT). The AIA has never reported disability demographics. -1.6% of total AIA Membership has identified as LGBTQIA+, while 7.1% of the adult US population identifies as LGBTQIA+ (https://lnkd.in/gXHE8bCn) -People of color and people with disabilities face barriers to education and employment that limit their earning potential. Black Americans are more likely to have a disability (https://lnkd.in/g3JXKptf) -Less than 1% of all dwelling units are equipped with features that would allow a wheelchair user to live independently (https://lnkd.in/gnZBqiNU) -13% of the US households include someone who uses a mobility-assistive device, and 19% of households include an individual with accessibility needs (https://lnkd.in/gq8jJX-p) -A 2021 Nature study examined 270 in-person conferences and found that most were organized in ways that led to exclusionary practices based on gender, career stages, and ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, and geographical backgrounds (https://lnkd.in/ghHrmA_m) -Virtual conferences improve accessibility and interaction (https://lnkd.in/gZiH4RkB) -Transitioning from in-person to virtual conferencing can reduce the carbon footprint by 94%, while transitioning to hybrid can reduce the carbon footprint by 66% (https://lnkd.in/gQeRAGdd) #diversity #inclusivity #equity #accessibility #disability #virtual #AIA #AIA24 #AIAConference

Can a disabled person lead a healthy and normal life? A disabled person can lead a fulfilling and meaningful life, which can be considered "normal" in many ways. While disabilities present unique challenges, they don't define a person's potential or worth. With: 1. Accessibility and accommodations 2. Supportive networks (family, friends, community) 3. Assistive technologies 4. Inclusive environments 5. Self-advocacy and empowerment Disabled individuals can: 1. Pursue education and careers 2. Build strong relationships and social connections 3. Engage in hobbies and interests 4. Participate in their communities 5. Live independently or interdependently 6. Experience joy, love, and success It's essential to recognize that: 1. Disability is a natural part of human diversity 2. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses 3. "Normal" is a social construct, and there's no one-size-fits-all definition By promoting inclusivity, accessibility, and acceptance, we can work towards a society where disabled individuals can thrive and live their lives to the fullest.
