Most of the critical systems we use today (e.g. Internet, digital signature, financial systems, critical infrastructure, etc) have very long tails... meaning that they were built historically and will continue to function for the next 10 or 15 years. Unless these systems are built with quantum safe cryptography, we are just kicking the problem down the road because one day when a powerful enough quantum computer is available, these systems will immediately become unsafe and vulnerable to quantum attacks. One of the tactics that cyber criminals use is what we call "Harvest now and decrypt later", where confidential information using non quantum-safe technology is being illegally collected, stored somewhere and then later be manipulated and unravelled when a powerful enough quantum computer is available. The message to us is very clear - it is not a time to panic, but certainly now is the right time to understand quantum safe and start planning for post quantum cryptography. In cybersecurity, cryptography serves as a crucial last line of defence when implemented correctly. Cryptography is fundamental to data security and privacy. Like a secure vault, it offers resilience against data breaches, ensuring that even if all other security measures fail, our most valuable information remains protected. However, achieving effective cryptography is challenging, requiring a careful balance between security, usability, and performance for each use case. Much like a safe, cryptography in principle can be compromised given sufficient time and resources. I had the privilege of speaking with Lory Piccirilli Thorpe, a leader in quantum-safe technologies at IBM, about the pressing need to address cybersecurity risks posed by quantum computing. Quantum computing promises unprecedented computational power, capable of breaking most of today’s widely used cryptographic methods. Historical lessons emphasise the necessity for organisations to be prepared for emerging threats and vulnerabilities, whether from more powerful computing technologies, poor implementation of cryptographic algorithms, or newly discovered design weaknesses. 'Harvest now, decrypt later' attacks are on the rise. Criminals are working harder to collect data which is currently encrypted using traditional cryptography methods, to decrypt sensitive information once quantum computers become commercially available. Commercial, scalable quantum computing will soon be a reality, and that's why it's so important for telecoms providers to transition to Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), as soon as possible to keep their data secure. Only data which is encrypted using quantum-secure methods will be able to withstand decryption from a quantum computer, and any data transmitted through conventional methods is currently at risk of being harvested, and stored, for future decryption.
