For my sustainability peers, I highly recommend this podcast with the CEO of Natura. 4 insights stuck with me: 1) How before 'corporate sustainability' even became a buzzword, Natura was running business on the values of "interdependence" and "value to society". Commitment to a thriving society and planet sits deep in Natura's DNA. The legacy of corporate values matters. (around minute 6:30) 2) Learning about Natura's model for "integrated P&L", where they have built internal systems to measure the net social and environmental value of their business actions, and not only financial value. Executives are compensated for contributing to integrated P&L and Natura is continuing to redesign aspects of its business model toward this new understanding of P&L. (around minute 13:30) 3) Hearing Ferreira talk about protecting the Amazon being Natura's source of competitive advantage. How cool is that?! From a business perspective, Natura needs to maintain a resilient, biodiverse supply chain and access raw resources. From a societal perspective, they need to ensure good relationships with and livelihoods of Amazon communities. As Ferreira says, (indirect quote) "this work starts with anthropologists and sociologists and then R&D comes and then comes supply chain and then marketing...cost of products must include paying back communities for indigenous knowledge." (around minute 17:50) 4) Finally, how Ferreira opens up about failures along the journey. He is humble and can find humor in failure. It was a breath of fresh air to hear a CEO openly discussing mistakes, learning and adjustments. Enjoy!
