At GJC, we partnered with a struggling hotel facing challenges in filling roles. Instead of attributing the issue to a lack of "good staff," we delved deeper into their people policy. It was like fixing a leaky bucket - focusing on retaining existing talent. When we asked staff if they would recommend their employer to anyone, the numbers were low. Our approach was simple yet effective: 👉 We enhanced the basic pay structure while adding extra perks like holidays, discounts stays for friends and family, and perk box offers. This comprehensive rewards package ensured competitiveness and boosted employee satisfaction. 👉 By fostering a culture of open communication and valuing employee feedback, we saw increased engagement and efficiency. Staff suggestions led to impactful improvements, lightening workloads and enhancing team dynamics. 👉 Implementing strong management practices, mentorship programs, and opportunities for advancement, we empowered staff to grow within the company. Training built on this foundation, creating a pathway for development and retention. The concept of adding near-to real time payments for casual staff was first discussed at a lunch with Jeff Williams two years ago, almost to the day, and today we launched the payment capabilities for the PAYC business. PAYC is going to the AirBnB equivalent of casual recruitment in Australia, pairing employees with employers and paying them in a fully compliant manner as soon as possible after their shift has been completed, versus the 7, 14 or even 21 days that a casual might wait to get paid today after the completion of a shift. Why does it take that long? Largely because of outdated payroll systems that haven't kept pace with the increasing casualisation in the Australian labour market, where 2.7m individuals are currently casual employees, across a range of industries. To start with, we will be looking to pay employees onto a digital card the following day after a shift has been completed on a weekday, and on the following Monday or Tuesday for shifts completed on Friday night or over the weekend, but our goal is to get this down to paying an employee within hours of their shift being completed, seven days a week. Employees will also have the option to be paid to their PAYC digital wallet and use that for all payments, in-store or online, wherever Mastercard is accepted, but also to transfer funds from their digital wallet to a nominated Australian bank account, enabling them to pay bills, pay rent and deal with cost of living issues.
