The nonprofit sector thrives on trust, and Montana's nonprofits are a testament to this! 🏞️ From providing essential social services to supporting local businesses, Montana's nonprofits play a vital role in the community. Trust, built through transparency, accountability, and a steadfast commitment to their missions, is crucial for their success. The Whitefish Community Foundation is a perfect example of fostering community engagement and trust. Their grant programs and events have significantly supported local nonprofits, proving that accountability and transparency can create lasting community support. However, this trust needs ongoing effort. Nonprofits must continue to be open and accountable to maintain the confidence of their donors and stakeholders. After all, 89% of donors cite trust as a critical factor in their giving decisions. As we look to the future, how can we ensure that nonprofits continue to build and maintain this critical trust? A recent report from Independent Sector showed that nonprofits made a significant rebound in public trust compared to previous years. - 57% of those surveyed indicated they trusted nonprofits, an increase of 5 points after 4 years of general decline in public trust. - The report showed that the public trusted nonprofits more than any other sector tracked, including government, business and media which have all declined in trust. - 94% of Americans are worried about the growing lack of national unity. The findings indicated that the public trusts nonprofits to reduce national divisions more than they trust corporations, government, or media. These numbers are huge. Nonprofits are in a critical position right now as the public turns to our sector more and more to meet community needs and bring people together. Do these numbers surprise you? A new survey shows that almost 80% of our state's nonprofits could be in financial trouble within a year - an alarming increase from 50% in 2022. Nonprofits are still rebuilding from COVID and economic factors are causing more people to seek help from social service organizations. Nonprofits rely heavily on philanthropic support and support is dwindling which can lead to programs being cut, staff being let go and nonprofits merging just to continue their work. https://lnkd.in/gKAsArer

Inflation might be reducing the value of your charitable giving and causing real challenges for nonprofits. Today, I write about how even some of the biggest funders might be allowing inflation to whittle away their contributions. Have you increased the size of your contributions as nonprofits face increased costs? Check it out over at the Center for Effective Philanthropy blog https://lnkd.in/evSQWEJC

The latest Giving USA data has some not-so-great news for the nonprofit sector. The new report shows that all four sources of giving – from individuals, foundations, bequests, and corporations – remained flat or declined when adjusted for inflation: charitable giving dropped 2.1% in 2023. This follows the abysmal giving declines of 13.4% in 2022. Source: Tennessee Nonprofits Network Weekly Updates To read the report: https://lnkd.in/eT5sE7VR

Really highlights the 'imperative' of non-profit leaders (and boards) being able to access the right support through appropriately skilled interventions.
What happens when you give non-profit organisations a big dollop of unrestricted funding? I'd been aware or Center for Effective Philanthropy's ongoing study of the impact of MacKenzie Scott's donations, but I'd missed this summary of the after-effects of a previous grant-making initiative that trusted 21 organisations with large unrestricted donations over 5 years. This quote stood out for me and should be of interest to any donor who prioritises accountability and leadership in their grantees: "This was the first time I felt like I was actually the CEO running my organization — able to do what I thought was crucial for building the organization and increasing impact.” https://lnkd.in/esijZjhf

Very insightful... financial freedom is an enabler of growth and transformation. This here is a great summary:.. Five years out, we did not see signs of a “lottery curse.” The nonprofits we studied did not buckle under the weight of large, unrestricted grants. To the contrary, they strengthened their organizations and leadership ranks, and they stewarded the funds with strategic rigor. They were able to innovate, adjust flexibly to new circumstances, and pursue new and more effective paths to scaling impact.

It's a powerful quote, Nick. And it echoes experiences featured in Making the case for Unrestricted Funding (https://lnkd.in/dFDPY5Yi): 'Unrestricted funding is the single most powerful thing that funders can do to support charities. It enables us to be agile and decisive in dealing with the ever-changing demands of the current uncertainty, while planning as best we can for whatever the future holds....Ultimately it means that we achieve more, help more people, and make more of a difference'.
