We are wishing Sheila Christopher, Executive Director of Hunger-Free PA, a big congrats on retirement 🎉🙌 Sheila has been relentlessly fighting food insecurity on behalf of Pennsylvanians for almost 40 years! She has made such an enormous impact through her work including: 🍏 Expanding the Senior Box Program to all 67 Pennsylvania counties, which now serves over 32,000 seniors each month 🍏 Lead the effort to pass the Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System Act, which facilitates PA-grown fresh food getting into the hands of those who need it. 🍏 Founded the Pennsylvania Hunger Action Coalition, a group of over 70 regional and state-wide organizations. Share deeply appreciates Sheila’s efforts, we will miss her very much, and wish her all the best in her retirement!

Volunteering at the Brentwood Farmers Market allows me to redistribute surplus food to local soup kitchens, making a meaningful impact on those in need. This experience has sparked a thought: just as I integrate my passions into community service, business owners should consider their values when planning for life after retirement. By aligning our passions with our post-business plans, we can create retirements that are not only fulfilling but also impactful. Dr. Steve Briggs, President of Berry College, has announced his retirement effective at the end of the 2024-2025 academic year. Berry’s eighth president, Briggs has served since 2006. Briggs describes his work as “embracing the enterprising spirit of Martha Berry and demonstrating the continuing relevance of an education of the head, heart and hands.” He and his wife, Brenda, a constant on campus, have made Berry their home. “We have had the joy of knowing thousands of students,” he stated, “with each generation forming Berry into its own vibrant and warm-hearted community.” "Dr. Briggs has radically transformed Berry while deepening its commitment to the ideals of Martha Berry," says Berry's Board Chair, Rick Gilbert. According to a Barna study conducted in 2022, at least one-quarter of Protestant pastors plan to retire within the next five years. Because of this, your church should have a #succession plan in place. Here are some key questions to consider: 1. What’s the emergency plan? If the unexpected happens and the organization’s senior leader is suddenly no longer able to fulfill his/her duties, who will step in? 2. Whose job is it to think about succession? Has a succession committee been identified? Has a singular person been assigned to be sure the organization stays on top of this important topic? 3. What do the organization’s governing documents say about succession, if anything? Is there anything in these documents or the organization’s policies that will need to be changed to allow a smooth transition? 4. What are the current leader’s expectations upon retirement? Is there a retirement plan in place? If not, what has the board authorized? 5. What does the next leader of this organization need to embody to carry the organization’s mission into the future? What skills are needed? What character traits would be required? As we often say at Michael Best, "Failing to plan is planning to fail."
