One of my new Job Search Accelerator members said, "A couple of weeks ago I was on LinkedIn, and then all of a sudden 5 hours went by 😳" They walked away not feeling great about themselves, how they spent their time, or their job prospects after this activity. To avoid this situation, here's a quick and effective engagement strategy to get in and get out of LinkedIn in 15 minutes. 1. Set a timer for 15 minutes. Yes, spending 5-15 minutes a day consistently, is better than hours aimlessly. 2. Go to a bookmarked folder on your browser of the specific profiles you want to visit that day. This requires, previously (and regularly) bookmarking the activity feed of the people you want to visit, so you can go straight to the good stuff and skip the feed the algorithm is pumping at you. 3. Click on one of the people in the folder, scroll through their activity feed, and then like or comment on anything that was truly helpful to you. Don’t overthink this! It doesn’t matter if they wrote it, shared it, or commented on it. It doesn’t matter if it’s 1 week or 1 year old. People like to be ACKNOWLEDGED. It makes them feel good. And, when you (genuinely) make people feel good they like you. 4. For anyone who shared something that you genuinely learned from or appreciated, send them a quick connection message and let them know. Say something like, “I stumbled upon your (article, post, comment, interview, etc) and it was really helpful to me. It made me think about xyz and I really appreciate it. I wanted to connect to say thank you and stay on top of future content you might share or create. Best, your name. 5. When the timer goes off, get the f@#$ off LinkedIn and go do something else more productive, fulfilling, useful, enjoyable, etc. Now, if you’re on LinkedIn to look for #jobs, or request informational interviews, that’s a slightly different strategy, but can still be done in similar small chunks of time. Don’t confuse what you're trying to do on the platform. 👉 GO IN with a targeted strategy. And then GET OUT!
