This is a case where the participant actually identified an issue and called to resolve it. In reality, we would have flagged this claim and caught the card transaction issue because OCA substantiates 100% of all transactions (as required by code). This is a great example of why employers should use a TPA that follows the law. Doing so, protects the employer and the participant, not the TPA (the Employer is the one legally responsible) in the event of a Plan audit. Given the fact that audits are rare, this example simply highlights the fact that health debit cards don't stop "bad" claims from going though the system. Good TPAs and solid processes are what brokers and employers should be looking for. Without them, employers end up paying substantially more in claims that they will never be aware of because of HIPAA and privacy rules. How much more does it cost in claims? We believe it's an average of 20% based upon groups we've taken over. Feel free to reach out if you want to learn more.
