👏 Last week we celebrated the #DiversityDays at Europol! 🌈 🌍 👩💻 👮♀ 👩⚖️ During these sessions we were invited to reflect on #gender equality and #sexism, #LGBTQI+ rights, #race and #ethnicity diversity and #cultural inclusivity. ⬇ Here some examples of the topics addressed: ⛓ How can #AI perpetuate wrong and hurtful #stereotypes and the implications when these tools are used by #lawenforcement authorities: AI reproduces implicit #biases of humans, even in the absence of explicit #algorithmic rules that stereotype. Human intervention is one of the solutions. However, not using factors such as #race and #skincolour for policing is another measure explained by Bas Böing. 🤝 Examples of initiatives from law enforcement to #fight #discrimination and #racism: AI profiling can exacerbate existing inequalities and deepen #mistrust between law enforcement and #minority communities. This can have serious consequences for those communities, including increased rates of policing, arrests, and incarceration. Therefore, training on these issues are essential to ensure a #fair, #efficient and #inclusive #police. 🎤 During these days remarkable voices came to participate and share their insights Ms Agnès Diallo (Executive Director of EU-Lisa), Ms Catherine De Bolle (Executive Director of Europol), Ms Michaela Moua (she/her) (Anti-Racism Coordinator at the European Commission), Ms Lut Vanderwaeren (Diversity and Inclusion Management at Federal Police Belgium), etc.

I'm proud to share my in-depth investigation into the AI boom's impact on the trans community, building on my capstone research project. 📰 Through my research, I spoke with 33 transgender and nonbinary individuals from across Latin America and the Caribbean, who shared their struggles against discrimination and the challenges they face in an increasingly hostile political climate in the U.S. FACTS: Last year, at least 32 transgender people were killed in the US, with most victims being trans people of color. AI discrimination is also a growing concern: facial recognition technology fails to recognize only 38% of transgender people. 🏳️⚧️ Experts warn that the growing reliance on AI-fueled systems, which often operate with a binary definition of gender, poses a threat to the trans community, perpetuating discrimination and violence. As Albert Fox Cahn, Executive Director (STOP), says, "The growth of AI discrimination demonstrates that we're not doing enough..." 🛑 Meredith Broussard, researcher: "When we are thinking about how A.I. discriminates, we have to think about how machine learning systems are built." 🖥️ Liaam, Winslet, activist, "They are created by people with biases, and those biases translate into code that then affects entire communities, especially the trans community, the queer community in general.”🗣️ During my capstone my tutor was alia malek And invaluable guidance and advice from Adriana Gallardo. And then my editor for this piece was Nicole Bode. Even more excited to also announce the publication of my second PhD paper on the #normalisation of #sexual #harassment on #Tinder. Literature confirms a prevalence of sexual harassment on #dating apps up to 88.8%. This research explores the experiences and perceptions of Tinder users upon facing online sexual harassment and the normalisation thereof. My recent op-ed, "Gender Disparity in Pakistan’s Police: Analyzing Current Statistics and Future Directions," explores the critical issue of gender representation in law enforcement, where women constitute 3.2% of the total force. The piece discusses statistical regional disparities, challenges in recruitment, leadership, and training, and how this imbalance affects the handling of gender-based violence (GBV) cases. It also suggests recommendations for improving female participation in the police force through targeted recruitment, policy reforms, and a more inclusive work environment. https://lnkd.in/dv_TY5Tm

Yesterday, CDT endorsed the bipartisan, bicameral DEFIANCE Act. This legislation updates the Violence Against Women Act to protect victims of AI-generated non consensual intimate images (NCII). Nonconsensual production and sharing of intimate images, especially via AI, is weaponized to harm women and LGBTQ+ communities disproportionately. AI has made NCII easier to produce and share, causing severe emotional, financial, and reputation damage. Carefully drafted to survive legal scrutiny, the DEFIANCE Act focuses squarely on the unique harms posed by AI-generated NCII while minimally impacting valuable speech. CDT urges Congress to pass the DEFIANCE Act now. It provides crucial updates to existing law, offering enhanced protection for those harmed by NCII while preserving essential free speech rights. https://lnkd.in/eKqPmJcH #Legislation #ProtectPrivacy #CDT #DefianceAct #VAWA

⚫ PRIDE DATA MONTH I'm reflecting on the significant strides and persistent challenges highlighted in #2024 ILGA World new report, "Laws on Us." This report maps the relentless opposition and progress in legal protections for LGBTI people across the globe. As someone who has experienced discrimination firsthand, these findings resonate deeply with me for a call to action. Key Highlights from the Report: - Criminalization: 1/3 of 193 UN member States still criminalize consensual same-sex relations, with the death penalty in 7 of them. - Freedom of Expression and Association: 59 States have laws restricting speech and the operation of LGBTI organizations. - Protection Against Discrimination: Only 77 States have employment discrimination protections based on sexual orientation. - Conversion Therapies': 16 States have nationwide bans on 'conversion therapies.' - Marriage and Adoption: Marriage equality exists in 35 States, and same-sex adoption is allowed in 36. - Legal Gender Recognition: 17 States allow legal gender recognition based on self-determination. Despite these challenges, there have been positive advances: - Legal gender recognition based on self-identification in countries like Ecuador, Finland, Germany, New Zealand, and Spain. - Nationwide protections against non-consensual interventions on intersex minors in 9 States. How important is it to eliminate discrimination? It's time to reflect on this and #actnow. Source: https://lnkd.in/dPNqirNj #HumanRights #Equality #Pride #Data #Ilga #NoDiscrimination #LawsOnUs

Counsellor with transgender daughters | Helping Parents of transgender children | Creator of Gloriously Unready Podcast - listen now
Have you been reading the media coverage of the Cass Review into care for young transgender people? I think it might be helpful to put it into some context so I'd like to share what I've been reading this morning. My own view? When my children came out, I embarked on a lengthy journey to unravel my own transphobia. It was transphobia that made me want to reject their identity because I saw it as "less than". That's cis-gender prejudice. As Freddy McConnell says in his Guardian article, if we accept that transgender adults exist, then we have to accept that transgender children also exist too. If we accept that transgender children exist then why aren't we doing more to help them, rather than erecting additional barriers to help them and their families? First though, a joint statement by Amnesty International & Liberty. It refers to how the Cass Review is being weaponised: https://lnkd.in/eCK5FEA5 PinkNews has written a summary of the key findings & takeaways here: worth reading for an overview: https://lnkd.in/eeCVBKGF There are also concerns about Cass disregarding research on the basis that it is not high quality. Highest quality research relies on randomised control trials and it's both impossible and unethical to do this for trans health care. People will readily identify if they're being given a placebo - the results of hormone treatment are obvious. Read an initial reaction from Dr Natacha Kennedy here: https://lnkd.in/esGDkxgS (and it's well worth following the link to Cal Horton's article on the Cass process) And an in-depth piece from Erin Reed here: https://lnkd.in/e7bwsDVg You may also like to look at The Guardian article written by Freddy McConnell and Robyn Vinter who interviews Aiden Kelly, a psychologist specialising in gender. #CassReview #transgenderawareness #prejudice #humanrights #gloriouslyunready

It was a pleasure to be a guest speaker at the ABA ROLI Internet Freedom Summit 2024, where I participated in the session titled "Digital Equality: Safeguarding Human Rights Online in North Macedonia and the Western Balkans," organized by the Metamorphosis Foundation. During my presentation, I highlighted the initiatives of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights aimed at addressing the impact of digital technology on marginalized communities, particularly focusing on the LGBT+ community and women. Our organization's efforts are comprehensive, encompassing the monitoring of human rights violations such as sexual harassment, bullying, and online hate speech. We provide vital free legal aid and actively engage in policy-making processes. Central to our work are three foundational principles constitutionally guaranteed: the security and privacy of personal data in digital spaces, freedom of expression, and digital security. I shared insights into our platforms for hate speech www.govornaomraza.mk and for hate crimes https://lnkd.in/dFtAtPkS, how they work and some of their successes so far. These platforms have been pivotal in addressing hate speech targeting various communities, including the recent surge in prejudicial rhetoric against the LGBTI+ community in proportion to the visibility of this community. During the period surrounding the announcement (26 May) and subsequent hosting of the Pride Parade (22 June), we witnessed a distressing rise in hate speech incidents. Comments on social media platforms have included calls for violence and the use of derogatory language invoking Nazi rhetoric to denigrate and marginalize LGBTI+ people. Reports on www.govornaomraza.mk surged during this time, primarily citing hate speech based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
