It's clear that boards have an important role to play in supporting resiliency and ensuring their organizations are able to adapt and thrive in the face of change. The recent EY Global Board Risk Survey highlights just how vital this role is, emphasizing the need for boards to challenge management assumptions and take an active role in shaping the strategic direction of their organizations. The survey finds that boards that invest in resiliency will be more successful in the long run. Thanks to my colleague, Kris Pederson, for explaining this below. Thank you for allowing me to share my experiences of making decisions under pressure. 🙂 It was great to share the learning from some of the life and death decisions that I have taken in my career. From sending armed officers into countless siege scenarios to a decision on what action to take on hearing death threats from hardened Nigerian kidnappers. In most of my crisis management experience there has been an element of surprise, a perceived or real loss of control. There have been no immediate obvious solutions and a shortage of time. Often there has been insufficient information or indeed too much information 👇 Some comments I shared about Risk Decisions: 👇 🔸 There has to be a willingness to make decisions in conditions of uncertainty 🔸 Safety of people is often the primary consideration and should be top of a working strategy priority list 🔸 We should consider the benefits of a decision against the seriousness and likelihood of possible harm 🔸 Decisions should be consistent. (Use a model) it helps when you are overwhelmed or when you have to justify that decision later 🔸 The amount of detailed documentation you record should reflect the likelihood of harm and its seriousness 🔸 Decision making requires a culture that learns from successes as well as failures 🔸 Good decisions should be identified, celebrated and shared Remember, if you are a leader you should take advice but stay in command. Your duty to intervene and challenge must be higher in crisis operations because of the attendant risks, so don’t hesitate to challenge. To do so is professional, appropriate and helpful to all concerned in the operation #decisionmaking #decisionmakingskills

We have observed that inspiring a deep sense of risk ownership in others is one of the greatest challenges risk professionals face. ▪ What are the conditions necessary for embedding shared ownership of risk in organisations? ▪ How can risk professionals bring about those conditions? ▪ In what ways can risk professionals inadvertently undermine shared ownership of risk? We explore these questions and strategies to address them in our upcoming professional development program for risk professionals.
