Four years ago today, I was putting the finishing touches behind the scenes on what would soon become Sharon's Anti-Racism Newsletter (SARN). The first issue was published on August 24th, 2020. SARN grew out of my inability to keep quiet about racism any longer, and my commitment to creating a space to showcase Black and Global Majority writers, activists, and eventually founders. I knew I wanted it to be a space for learning (hence the monthly reading lists), and soon realised I also wanted it to prompt action, which is why later articles often include invitations to reflect or act. I love the relationships I've built through the newsletter, and the platform that allows me to showcase so many others. I publish around 120 pieces of content each year. To date, there are more than 500 pieces in the newsletter, including 49 reading lists, 53 podcast episodes, 89 interviews, and 235 essays. It's also a great foundation and resource for the anti-racism community I'm building, but more on that another time. A little insight into the start of the newsletter, and its purpose.

Continuing with this week's theme of helping people get clarity and take action, today I'm highlighting Sharon's Anti-Racism Newsletter, which launched in August 2020. The precursor to the newsletter, which was my Medium account, started as writing for myself. I reached a point where I had to talk about the racism I'd experienced or I'd burst. But as an educator at heart, it was almost inevitable that I'd do so in a way that shone a light on these experiences (which weren't unique to me, by any means) and that I'd want people to DO something with what they were reading. (Side note:what's different about my perspective is that I've lived in different places and am.a product of many cultural experiences. I've also studied questions of identity. I'm part of a multiracial family. I bring those layered experiences, and others, to everything I write.) The newsletter has evolved a bit over the years, including using it as a platform to highlight others, but I still hope that when people read the newsletter, they: - get a perspective on racism they might not have considered - use that new awareness to change his they show up as anti-racists The feedback from the latest reader survey suggests that this clarity and action are happening, which is great! Finally, though the newsletter is in many ways a labour of love, educating about racism also takes a mental and emotional toll. The Daily Grind of Racism and Exclusion - coming tomorrow in SARN. It's an excerpt from a conversation I had with Dr. Jonathan Ashong-Lamptey, along with some current thoughts. "It is those day to day, minute by minute, little microaggressions, little incidences of racism, little exclusions, little signals that you don't belong, or you're not considered to belong.
