"-Marie Beecham As we celebrate today, we should also be looking ahead to ensure we are uplifting the voices who aren't usually heard. We proudly celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth and pay homage to Black individuals' extensive contributions throughout history. As the preeminent member organization dedicated to fostering the growth of Global Black leaders, it is our responsibility to utilize our platforms to amplify their achievements, offering a voice and serving as a source of inspiration for the next generation. Our dedication to this effort is not confined to a single month but rather interwoven into our mission. Black History is American History and a reminder that we are all part of a shared narrative. Let us reflect on the enduring values of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) that continue to shape our world. Although progress has been made, it's crucial to recognize that the struggle for equality persists. Recent events have shown that only by working together can we create a world where everyone is recognized for their talents and has the freedom to pursue their dreams. “We have no hope of solving our problems without harnessing the diversity, the energy, and the creativity of all our people.” – Roger Wilkins, famed civil rights leader and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist.

Today we recognize and celebrate America’s “Second Independence Day,” Juneteenth. At GovEx, where we focus on putting data to work for the public good, we know that data was used to dehumanize Black Americans during slavery and that descendants of enslaved people have often been victimized by the unethical collection and application of data. We are committed to addressing structural and entrenched racism, recognizing the public sector’s role in perpetuating these legacies, and addressing these issues as a team and in collaboration with the cities we serve. This means examining analytical methods and data, actively working to eliminate bias, and advocating for data-driven policies that uplift Black Americans. For a list of data-related Juneteenth resources, check out this compilation from the ICPSR at University of Michigan Institute for Social Research → https://hubs.ly/Q02CsjXJ0

This Black History Month, we honor the invaluable contributions of Black Americans to our nation's history, culture, and legal system. As we look back on their enduring legacy, we both appreciate how far we've come and recognize how much further we have to go to secure justice and equality for all. According to the American Bar Association, African Americans account for just 5% of all lawyers in the United States while representing 13.4% of the total U.S. population, the same share as a decade ago. We're committed to closing that gap. Together, let's continue to champion diversity and inclusion not just this month, but every day of the year. #TuckerEllis #BlackHistoryMonth #DiversityandInclusion #LegalExcellence #JusticeforAll

As we celebrate Juneteenth, we must also acknowledge the invisible chains that still bind our country due to systemic racism. The legacy of slavery continues to impact the lives of Black Americans today, from disproportionately high rates of incarceration to limited access to quality education and opportunities. We must all commit to being actively anti-racist and dismantling the systems that uphold white supremacy. This means advocating for policies that promote equity and justice, supporting Black-owned businesses, and amplifying the voices of marginalized communities. As a professional in the corporate world, I recognize the importance of creating inclusive workplaces where all employees feel seen, heard, and valued. We must actively work to dismantle the barriers that prevent Black professionals from advancing in their careers and ensure that everyone has access to the same opportunities for success. Let us use this day of celebration as a reminder of the work that still needs to be done to create a truly equal and just society. We must continue to educate others, have difficult conversations, and take action.

Today, we honor the historical significance of Juneteenth, commemorating the emancipation of the last group of enslaved Black Americans by Union troops on June 19, 1865. At ASK Energy, we recognize that Juneteenth is not just Black history; it's American history. 🇺🇸 As we celebrate, let's take meaningful steps toward diversity, equity, and inclusion: 1. Learn and Listen: Engage in open conversations about the Black experience. Reflect on what you know and what you don't. Let's learn together! 🗣️ 2. Connect to Broader Goals: Link Juneteenth to our broader DEI objectives. By celebrating this day, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace. 🌟 3. Explore Black History: Encourage employees to explore Black history. Share resources, books, and documentaries. Knowledge empowers change! 📚 Happy Juneteenth! February marks the beginning of a special time of remembrance and reflection. As Black History Month kicks off, I invite you all to join us in honoring African Americans' indelible impact and influence today and through the ages. This month is about so much more than achievements alone - it is a celebration of resilience, perseverance, and courage in the face of immense adversity. From revolutionaries who fought tirelessly for equality and justice to brilliant scientific minds who pushed the boundaries of what was thought possible, the contributions of the Black community span all areas of life and culture. Though discrimination and its ugly echoes still persist, taking time to educate ourselves on Black history gives us insights into how far we've come as a society. It also reminds us of the work still left to be done in championing diversity, empowerment, and true unity. As Dr. King said, the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. So, let compassion and understanding guide us in the weeks ahead. Learn about inspiring figures like Shirley Chisholm, Benjamin Banneker, or Frederick Douglass. Support Black-owned businesses and amplify Black voices. Notable Black advisors and wealth managers, including William Huston, Ekenna Anya-Gafu, Mellody Hobson, Chris Browning, Patrice Washington, Dasarte Yarnway, and Elizabeth Salas Evans. Most of all, honor the legacy of leadership through non-violence by continuing the vital conversations around racial equity.

Today marks the last day of Black History Month UK. That doesn't mean your actions for change should end. Quite the opposite, you should be using this month to create and commit to ambitious targets for year round change. In order to drive positive and much-needed action for our Black employees we must be aware of some of the harmful and often common misconceptions about the UK's Black communities. Take some time out today to hear from three of INvolve's Role Models Chimuka Muyovwe, Olivia Grant and Sharniya Ferdinand (She/Her) on some of the common misconceptions about Black people and Black communities. Each of these Role Models touch upon important issues such as inaccurate stereotypes imposed upon Black people, the varied and vibrant histories of Black people in the UK and how a lack of knowledge and understanding can detrimentally affect Black employees within our global organizations. What are some other misconceptions that you'd like to debunk? Let us know if the comments! #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistoryMonth2023 #BHM2023 #DEI #Diversityandinclusion #HERRoleModels23 #EMRoleModels23 #SalutingOurSisters #BusinessInsights Suki Sandhu OBE
