While everyone is celebrating the holiday season, the horse show world is faced with an upcoming rule effective on February 1, 2025, by the Dept of Ag’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. The Horse Protection Act’s (HPA) prohibition against sored horses participating in shows, exhibitions, sales, and auctions extends to events involving all horse breeds. Horses get knicks and scratches just because they want to, but this could now disqualify an equestrian from entering that event. While I am for not making a sore horse show, this is overstepping. There is also a section where it is prohibited to use fly spray. This will effect disciplines: Dressage, Reining, Polo, Hunter Under Saddle and many more.
Why are they targeting only 1/2 of the disciplines out there? Exempt: Barrel Racing, Racing, Show Jumping…
Many are questioning if the USDA will have funding to hire said inspectors.
This will also effect 4H. The building block for so many. Many of us are working to stop the revisions.
We need everyone’s support. You can go to Western Justice for more information.
