To win by cheating is to lose in a different way… -Stoic Reflecting on my journey, I've encountered setbacks—missed opportunities, failed initiatives, and promotions that slipped away. Yet, these losses have never tempted me to compromise my values. At the dinner table, I openly discuss my professional and personal losses with my children. It serves a dual purpose: - Demonstrating that I, like everyone, experience defeat and setbacks in things that matter deeply to me. - Teaching them how to navigate disappointment, negative emotions, and most importantly, how to persevere and progress. Moreover, these conversations shed light on the reality of how some achieve success through questionable means. Food for thought; Yes, humility is important. But naming is powerful. Humility without the power to name strengths is just false humility. The naming of strengths without humility is uninformed pride. When used together, humility + naming can be transformational. To understand what we were made to do, we must know how to name what we are good at doing. This is really hard to do on our own, and here’s why. The things we are the best at feel like second nature. We usually don’t even know we are doing them, let alone doing them in a way in which others benefit. They just feel so normal that we think everyone can do them. We don’t feel special. We need someone to help us name what we do. First, start making a list of the things you know that you do well. Next, think back on any positive feedback or affirmations that you’ve received. Pay attention to phrases like “I can’t believe you can …” or “I wish I could do …. like you can.” Then start to compile a list of what others have noted you do well. Tuesday Reflections: Lessons from Morris As I watched “Tuesday with Morris", I couldn't help but reflect upon some of the most basic queries the play brought to our notice concerning life. And among many, one of the questions goes like: *Are we at peace with ourselves?* Another question that is still prevailing is: How do we say goodbye? As Morris teaches us, success is not about what we achieve but what happens inside. Are we living with at least some pieces? This again sets us thinking about another essential practice that must be nourished in personal and professional life: constant reflection on our actions, decisions, and values to determine whether these are congruent with who we are. It also reminded us that sometimes, we all need a hug—a significant method of connecting with others! Amidst all the hustles and ambiguities of life, we need a hug that, with no words, can speak volumes about how much we care about one another.
