SBVA, led by CEO Lee Jun-pyo, has announced its leadership in the pre-IPO funding round for Baropharm, a comprehensive pharmacy management platform. This round attracted new investor KDB Capital, alongside existing backers Mirae Asset Capital, Mirae Asset Venture Investment, and Company K Partners, totaling an impressive ₩15 billion ($11 million) in investments. Baropharm's cumulative funding has now reached ₩35 billion ($26 million) as it prepares for its IPO, having appointed Mirae Asset Securities as its lead manager in March. Founded in July 2021 by practicing pharmacists Kim Seul-ki and Shin Kyung-do, Baropharm has rapidly grown, now serving over 20,000 pharmacies—80% of the national market—and achieving a cumulative order volume of ₩3 trillion. The platform enhances pharmacy operations by providing integrated pharmaceutical ordering, restocking alerts for out-of-stock items, returns management, and community features, significantly improving customer convenience. Jung Ji-woo, Executive Director of SBVA, remarked, "Since its inception, Baropharm has swiftly attracted customers and proven the competitiveness of its pharmaceutical ordering platform through remarkable growth. What’s next for Doliprane? Sanofi's consumer health unit, home to the iconic Doliprane, is stirring up a bidding frenzy ! Two heavyweight contenders have stepped into the ring for a potential $17 billion deal : Clayton Dubilier & Rice and PAI Partners (with an all-star lineup of co-investors). PAI Partners isn't playing solo. They've assembled a team: Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), Singapore's GIC, British Columbia Investment. Sanofi's potential divestiture aligns with their laser-focused strategy of streamlining operations. But here's the kicker : if successful, the winning bidder will snag a whopping 50% stake in Doliprane's parent unit. No decision has been inked yet. If the bids don't hit the sweet spot, Sanofi might pivot to a spinoff strategy. An intriguing deal to follow :)

💡 NAVIGATING RISK AVERSION IN LARGE PHARMA: INSIGHTS FROM A CBO As I gather insights for my upcoming report on Chief Business Officer challenges, another recurring theme has emerged: risk aversion in large pharmaceutical companies. In a recent conversation, a CBO from a clinical-stage, US-based biotech shared his experience: "When you're sitting in one of those corporate development roles in a large biopharma, you're not incentivized to say yes, because most of the time things won't work. Nobody wants to be remembered as the person who spent money on something that didn’t succeed." This creates a bias toward saying “no” to early-stage deals, even though larger companies could benefit from making multiple small bets. The idea of having “more shots on goal” (making many smaller investments to increase the chance of success) often loses out to the trend toward fewer, larger acquisitions. 🔑 The solution? Building internal champions. The CBO emphasized that for early-stage biotech companies, success often depends on finding internal scientific or technical champions within big pharma. Corporate development teams alone can’t push these deals through—internal champions help navigate internal processes and bring key stakeholders to the table. For small biotech companies, proactively identifying and nurturing relationships with these champions is key to unlocking potential partnerships.
