A hammer and duct tape can fix everything! We all know that's not true. They can fix a lot of things, but definitely not everything. As you transition from the military, or go through any of life's transitions, it is important to learn what tools you need and to use the right tools for the job. Sometimes you need tact. Sometimes you a specific outfit or uniform. Sometimes you need conversational skills. Sometimes it's your resume. The list goes on and on. The important thing is to figure out what tools you need to accomplish whatever mission you're tackling. Happy Saturday . Smile 😊 I have seen a lot of posts about “ Corporate world and military world is different “ . How ? My opinion is my own : Is not different, we as veterans choose to be that way. We live in the past , we only hang out with veterans, and for everything we blame the corporate side or the military side. “ how broke we are , how this and that “ You left the military for a reason , is the past and a closed chapter. Stop living in the past and move on. If you have VA benefits , go see VA and get help , if you have civilian insurance go see civ Doc. Yes civilians will welcome you with open arms . They will support you . At the same time, work harder than everyone , do more than every one , smile , respect everyone , be humble, and you will be just fine. Is no different in the military , rank is earned ( the ones that have earned it ) , and respect is earned . Move on. You are in the civilian side or what ever we want to call it. I attended an event that made me think. The Veteran had more support from the civilians than his own community. This is the hard truth. The military transition can be troublesome. There is a lot of uncertainty that comes with transitioning out of the military. - Where to live - Next job - and much more But this week we're talking about some of the "little" things we don't necessarily think about when it comes to transition. We start with my nemesis...fashion. If it was left to me, I'd probably never match and I'd often be in gym shorts and tank top. If you're fashion challenged like me, find someone who can help you like a spouse or friend. Let them take you shopping! Fashion can be intimidating, but learning simple matching techniques can greatly assist you. You've worn a uniform for years, now it's time to learn how to dress. Finding comfort in same, same. Leaving the military can be a scary transition. So many differences. But what happens when we change our mindset and look for similarities? In my new safety position, I am learning that there are a lot of similarities between the military and the civilian world. This makes me feel happy and safe! 1. Being a safety person on a jobsite is a lot like being a 1SG in the motor pool. I can do this! 2. The heat warning system (Green, Yellow, Red, Black) on a jobsite is the same one we use in the Army. I've got this! Whenever we find something that is the same or similar, there is this calm that sets in for us, like a big old hug from an old friend! Are you looking for the similarities? Here’s the thing: we all start somewhere. Would I expect someone brand new and with zero experience to Aerial Resupply Coffee® to steer the company? No. And while the entire land navigation / Army Lieutenant joke is a bit overplayed, it does highlight one thing - you need time and trust. Some LTs are very good at land navigation - but they need time to build trust. And unfortunately, their rank means they are still seen as new. Perhaps that’s the reason why people think they can be a chief operating officer right out of the military - regardless of industry. They think that because they know the technical details, they can automatically do the job. Except they lack experience. Do this, and I guarantee you'll be 10X more productive than ever. Shut off your phone notifications. There's no way I'd get as much stuff done as I do if I had my phone near me all the time with notifications going off, buzzing non-stop.  I've got a special setup on my phone for when and how I get notifications that allows me to get into flow and crush my deep work that needs to get done instead of searching on my phone and getting distracted by social media.
