Launched at #ClimateWeekNYC, the Women Leading On Climate network - spearheaded by women in senior positions across business, government and civil society - aims to accelerate progress on climate action globally, write María Mendiluce, CEO of We Mean Business Coalition, and Catherine McKenna, founder and CEO of Climate and Nature Solutions. Women have been a major force behind our most significant milestones in combating climate change. Leaders like Christiana Figueres, former Executive Secretary of UNFCCC UN, Laurence Tubiana, head of the European Climate Foundation, and Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland, were pivotal in securing the #ParisAgreement. In the private sector, companies with more women in leadership roles are taking stronger climate actions and showing higher transparency in emissions disclosures. Women in the global South: ✅ bearing the brunt of climate change ✅ solving it Some of the biggest global successes on climate come from women in the global South: Christiana Figueres ➡ architect of the Paris Climate Agreement Madeleine Diouf Sarr ➡ secured Loss and Damage fund Wangari Muta Maathai ➡ helped launch the UNFCCC Women do three-quarters of the world’s unpaid labor, according to a report by Oxfam. This includes everything from planting smallholder farms to gathering water to caring for sick family members. This is all work that is likely to be affected by climate change. Women are solving the grinding daily challenges of the climate crisis with ingenuity. They are shifting the dates when crops are planted, trying new ways to get water, and making time in busy days to devote extra care to those who are ill from climate-related illnesses. 🚨 Last week, COP29 announced their Organising Committee, which featured 28 men and ZERO women. We’re pleased to see that following international backlash, 12 women have now been appointed to the Committee, but this does not go far enough. The Committee now has a 29% female representation, yet women make up 50% of the global population and are more likely to be impacted by climate change. Evidence shows that when women are included in policy and decision-making, there is increased responsiveness to citizens' needs, increased cooperation across party and ethnic lines and more sustainable peace achieved. All of which are vital to effective climate change solutions and why they are a key pillar in every facet of our work. 🌏 We are happy to see that by coming together as a global community, we have managed to force the appointment of 12 women to this Committee, but we owe it to Mother Earth to do better. 🌏 Women and girls are disproportionately affected by climate change but continue to be left out of climate conversations. This disparity has been demonstrated once again with the announcement of the COP29 Organisational Committee. This committee is comprised of 28 men and does not feature any women. Women have an essential role in climate action. Our projects strive for at least 50% female participation, and we stand for women's full, fair and equitable participation in climate decision-making. Women are the backbone of communities worldwide, but their voices are often silenced in climate decision-making. Our founder Dr Anino Emuwa called for change at the recently concluded London Climate Action Week, highlighting the critical need for women’s inclusion in climate negotiations. Women’s experiences and perspectives are vital in addressing the climate crisis, which disproportionately affects them.
