Why is teaching intercultural capability important? According to Brad Nguyen, "When learning about world history, understanding the migration of knowledge and ideas from one culture to another can help us to better understand our own culture and develop a deeper respect for the culture of others."
When do we do it? "Teaching the history of cultures from every continent and the major religions of the world is not achievable in a single unit; it must be achieved over several years of schooling."
Crucially, though, giving students agency in their learning can limit this as "students choose topics that they know about ... Consider, for example, the impact of knowledge on student agency when they visit the school library. Students who have little knowledge of the world will see less of interest on the bookshelves; they will have little from which to choose. Students with more knowledge will see more of interest and thus more from which to choose."
