My journey as a developer started in Brazil mainly working remotely for North American companies. Those early experiences taught me a lot about remote work - long before it was mainstream. Along with culture and language barriers - the constant push to prove that distance doesn’t diminish talent. Ten years later here I was in the other side - in Canada hiring developers from Latin America through nearshore development companies. With time and experience, I gained a deeper understanding of what drives high-performing teams - especially when distributed. It boils down to effective people management - ensuring that engineers feel engaged, supported, and aligned with the company’s goals. One common issue I’ve observed with many nearshore development companies is that while they employ skilled engineers, these engineers often experience a significant disconnect from the company that hired them. This disconnect can lead to low engagement, causing engineers to feel eager to leave or switch directly to the client.
