Happy first-ever World Day for Assistive Technology! Kudos to #UnlockTheEveryday (a campaign by ATscale, the Global Partnership for Assistive Technology) for demonstrating the power and the joy of assistive devices, including eyeglasses. Access to assistive technology is a human right but today only 10% of people in low-income countries can access the AT they need. Age-related blurry vision — presbyopia — remains the world's most common disability with 826 million people lacking the basic reading glasses they need. On the first ever World Day for Assistive Technology, June 4, we’re calling on governments to prioritize the needs of people who would benefit from assistive technology. Assistive technology (AT) refers to the assistive products, and their related systems and services. Assistive products can facilitate people’s ability to move, communicate, and see better than before. Economically, the figures are dramatic. Investment in four products - hearing aids, prostheses, eyeglasses and wheelchairs - will result in a return on investment of 9:1. For a child in a low- or middle-income country, access to assistive technology can later make a difference of US$100,000 in lifetime income. @hear_like_me Dolls equipped with cochlear implants not only encourage children to embrace their own technology but also foster a positive affinity towards it. When children see dolls with cochlear implants, it helps them feel more comfortable with their own cochlear implants or hearing aids. They see that it’s normal and okay to use such technology, which can reduce any feelings of self-consciousness or insecurity they might have. Additionally, by #playing with these #dolls, #children can develop a positive attitude towards their #technology, viewing it as something #helpful and even desirable rather than something to be ashamed of or hide. Today we’re proud to be supporting the first ever World Day for Assistive Technology. Whether it’s eyeglasses, hearing aids, wheelchairs, prosthetics, screen-readers or other products, 2.5 billion people need at least one form of assistive product today – and that number is expected to reach 3.5 billion by 2050. Millions of people around the world are prevented from going to school or earning a living because they can’t access the assistive technology they need. This has to change. It’s time to ensure that everyone, everywhere can access the assistive technology they need - to study, work, and enjoy the everyday moments that many of us take for granted.
