Our cities are currently facing a dilemma where the limited spaces available for children to play are failing to truly connect nature and people. These spaces must foster a deep connection between individuals and the environment, igniting a love for nature and unlocking the true potential of the land. By doing so, we can harness its inherent value to combat the heat island effect, enhance carbon capture, and promote community engagement. The key lies in recognizing that nature is not a problem to be solved, but rather the solution to some of the most pressing challenges we encounter today.

YES! is starting with its first activity this week: Post a picture demonstrating how your work/studies have a positive impacton community. Feel free to explain it: what is your community that you serve/inhabit? What is the most rewarding thing about helping community? What is something that you think communities would benefit from your work, that is different or unconventional? For me personally, my local community is in Upstate New York, and as there are many people who have moved here to appreciate the natural beauty of the area, as well as locals who have lived here for generations, everyone has some story to tell from their perspective of the area’s natural history. One thing that is rewarding about serving it is seeing people and families come together and have fun in a local setting, and seeing that they can do fun and rewarding things for the environment right where they are. And, I truly believe that my community could really start to benefit from their creative projects being celebrated as a new way of collaborating in a local setting, to set an example for other communities. In order to create change, we need to embrace our unique skills and the qualities that make us outstanding. The environment is filled with communities, and we are one of them, contributing to it with our output. If our output is positive and fulfilling for everyone, just imagine how the Earth community can become even stronger than before! #community #earth #earthcommunity #communityaction #communityclimate

Planning and placemaking must evolve as much as the way we get to work, get our supplies and connect with our community. As America becomes more diverse, there is no single strategy to reach all people who will be impacted — positively or negatively — from a new project, land use or zoning. https://lnkd.in/eVrfpswi

My walk home tonight was an existential reflection on belonging and community. "Building Communities" was the core topic of tonight's seminar hosted by Low Entropy Foundation. I know that communities exits wherever people are. Their closeness or friendliness doesn't matter. The question is, do we want to be part of a community? If yes, what kind of a community? Do we enjoy getting out of our homes, commuting, and seeing people? Or do we like the idea of a community? What do we hope to gain from community? Are communities a comfort zone, allowing us to be ourselves, or a challenging opportunity to become who we aspire to be? There is no right or wrong answer. It comes down to our personalities, life goals, and purpose. "If you can't find a community, build one." - Maggie G. Between 41% and 79% of people report feeling lonely, depending on the generation. AND people are reporting fewer meaningful connections, with only about 16% feeling very attached to their communities. This creates a golden opportunity for park and recreation departments. The 2023 Surgeon General Advisory, "Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation" outlines six pillars to building socially connected communities. Jo Burns goes over each of these pillars and their ties to parks and recreation.
