The tenure for U.S. retail and packaged goods company CEOs is 7 months shorter than their colleagues in other industries such as automotive or finance. Consider that among the Russell 300, CPG and Retail CEOs held their jobs for an average of 7.7 years, compared to the overall average of 10 years. Estee Lauder, Heinz, Party City, Savage x Fenty, Starbucks, Under, Unilever, and others. Over the last 60 years, short-term thinking has been entrenched in U.S. culture. I often talk/think about the elements of anti-globalization that are in motion right now. For most business leaders, there is no anti-growth mentality so global expansion is usually on the table for consideration. Thanks for sharing Neil Saunders . I knew the sales drop had been consistent but was definitely not clear that #sales decreased at Gap more than 50% over 20 years. Gap was the #bluechip #brand when I was growing up. It was the go to for both #backtoschool and #christmas shopping. In my mind the key issues have been finding the consistency of brand positioning, service and product assortment. In terms of product - as with any retailer there is the sweet spot balance of fashion versus core. Fashion is really important to draw attention to windows in malls, advertising and social media. It’s what can effectively drive sales even if the hook was fashion and they buy core. As for core there has been zero evolution. For example within a blue and white core denim assortment you still need some fashion present newness and be on trend. This being totally different than a capsule of 100% fashion. Richard Dickson has multiple containers or buckets of challenges to face - most at the same time and quickly. Must stop the erosion in market share, stabilize and then grow. If I were him - #I would make a 5 year commitment to be 100% #sustainable. Once the product is in great place the #2 lever is going to be social media - starting with not the buy ask but by sharing authentic content that will resonate with the brand. It could be as simple as exposing how a pair of jeans are made, explaining their mission around sustainability. And, that does that word even mean or what’s involved in turning the brand around. This could be an on-going dialogue from Richard Dickson to the world on Facebook, Instagram and You Tube. Daily post. And, not once does he ask anyone to buy anything. Talk about the Mattel experience and what that will bring to the gap - who, what, when, where and how. For example, students would eat this up and then share with their followers. They need to get to the point of posts being shared in the tens of millions. But need the right strategy and tactics. I would recommend HookPoint Media & Brendan Kane . Get them on board tomorrow. They handle everything from a start-up leather brand that just literally celebrated their 200 million view, large consumer brands to Taylor Swift who was going no e-commerce business despite massive financial success and huge social media following. I hope he can succeed as Gap is like Ford Motor Company Cheerios and The Coca-Cola Company . Gap is part of the fabric of our society. Please share my post if you appreciate the content. I found the The Wall Street Journal article on Gap Inc. and Richard Dickson interesting and from comments in my newsletter and speaking to consumers it seems the biggest disconnects are: 🥱 boring inventory (and no reason to buy vs the plethora of interesting product today in market) 🙃 poor customer experience in store (no stock on hand, not getting the answers needed - even in the article we see the CEO experience this) and the disconnect between in store and online (ex promos) For an organization this large, how does any CEO can make an outsize impact and change/overhaul rapidly enough that they aren’t ousted before the business and sentiment turns around?

In Western markets, Sephora has leveraged its high-quality sales service in physical stores and established itself as a way for consumers to discover niche brands. This strategy is less effective in China where online shopping is the dominant mode of consumption and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.’s Taobao and Tmall feature millions of labels. Competition from cheaper local brands is also surging. Chinese cosmetics makers captured some 50 percent of the country’s market last year, exceeding that of overseas brands for the first time, state media reported.” A classic example of a renowned global beauty brand not understanding the assignment in a foreign market. 

I would love to see more posts from HR Professionals on the LuLulemon founder’s response on DEI/marketing and tie in Compliance. Also how Small businesses need to tie things (culture, policies, etc) in early. I already shared my thoughts on it but my recap is that businesses have certain views that show up as they run their business. You can’t build inclusivity if it’s not something you really want to do. As consumers, I feel as though we need to stop expecting businesses to accept everyone, stop following names, and go to where we’re respected.
