🌊 Purina's Ocean Restoration Programme: Tackling the Carbon Pawprint Did you know that our beloved pets have a significant environmental impact? Purina, the pet food giant, is taking innovative steps to address this often-overlooked issue. Key Highlights: • Purina Europe has launched an ambitious Ocean Restoration Program to restore 1,500 hectares of critical marine habitats. • The programme focuses on restoring seagrass meadows, seaweed forests, and oyster reefs across Europe. • Initial projects are underway in the Netherlands, France, Norway, and Portugal, with plans to expand to Germany and the UK. Why It Matters: • Pet food contributes significantly to our pets' carbon pawprints, with food systems accounting for 80% of global deforestation and 29% of greenhouse gas emissions. • Purina's efforts go beyond responsible sourcing, aiming to actively restore the ecosystems from which they source ingredients. • The programme takes a holistic approach, addressing interconnected marine challenges and collaborating with local experts and communities. Looking Ahead: Purina's initiative highlights the crucial role businesses can play in ocean conservation and climate action. As Kerstin Schmeiduch, Purina Europe's director of corporate communications and sustainability, puts it: "We don't need incremental, we need exponential." At Green Work Solution, we're inspired by Purina's commitment to sustainability and innovation. How is your organisation tackling environmental challenges? At Mars our commitment to sustainability is deeply intertwined with our love for pets. The decisions we make are guided by our desire to create a better world, one where pets and pet parents can thrive. Our latest Sustainable in a Generation Report highlights how we are driving down GHG emissions while growing our business. We have removed 5.7 million metric tons of GHG from our full value chain — the equivalent GHG emissions generated by more than 1.3 million gasoline-powered automobiles in a year. Our approach focuses on three key areas: healthy planet, thriving people, and nourishing wellbeing. And we’re working hard to bring more sustainable choices to pet parents, from packaging that is easier to recycle, reuse, and compost, to lower impact ingredients in our pet food which are just as nutritious and palatable. By building strong collaborations and working together we can make a real difference and ensure a healthier, happier future for our beloved pets and the planet we love. Sustainability – with many if not all environments in a delicate state, we need to consider this for our pets too. Seriously. That includes their waste. An interesting study in Belgium involved estimating input of nitrogen and phosphorus from dog feces and urine in peri-urban areas. Link in comments. And it was not insignificant. Particularly from feces. While it might not feel like our pets on their own are having a lot of impact, when that is multiplied by all of the dogs accessing such areas it is a big deal. So the main message is – pick it up. Always! And for organizations in charge of these areas, a lot more information is needed on which ones should be dog-free. And as importantly, places where dogs can be welcome to live their outdoor and social lives. #petsustainability #sustainabilitygoals #abetterworldforpets The views expressed in my posts are my own and do not reflect the views of my employer.
