The aviation industry is an energy-intensive one and faces its own set of decarbonisation challenges, where many low carbon and renewable energy solutions such as electrification are currently not fit for purpose. This is where sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) can play a vital role, as it is a viable and scalable type of biofuel which can be blended at a ratio of up to 50% with conventional jet fuel. This makes it an exciting option for enabling the sector to decarbonise at scale today using existing infrastructure. While we lay the foundations for tomorrow’s low carbon energy systems, Shell is delivering high impact solutions that enable our customers in hard-to-abate industries to meet their current energy needs while driving forward their emissions reduction journey. One such customer is Emirates which has used SAF supplied by Shell to power several of its flights from Dubai International Airport and London Heathrow. Shell needs to investigate and revoke this operators franchise license. They deliberately have the sign off and have the pumps dimly lot so people don’t notice they are price gouging. They are charging $2.25 MORE per gallon than all other stations within a mile of here including another shell 1 mile away. If you look at the Google review of this station you will see they have been doing this for months. Firstly, SAF availability is limited and production is resource-intensive, often competing with food production. Also, the 50% blend is not universally achievable today. Moreover, Shell’s promotion of SAF can be seen as greenwashing, diverting attention from the need for systemic changes, like reducing air travel demand and investing in true zero-emission technologies. Improved transparency on SAF sourcing, lifecycle emissions, and clear commitments to broader decarbonization strategies are needed for genuine progress.
