“Woods argued that “wind and solar alone can’t solve emissions in the industrial sectors that are at the heart of a modern society”, but that technologies such as carbon capture and storage, where emissions are captured at source and are transported for permanent storage, could do so.” #energytransition

Any robust analysis of net zero emissions pathways which achieve the aims of the Paris Agreement (e.g. in the latest IPCC AR6 report) demonstrate the need to balance remaining emissions against carbon sinks via carbon removals - and that both land management and engineered carbon removals have a critical role to play in this balancing equation. I'm really pleased to share Ipieca's briefing on The role of carbon compensated products in the energy transition. It provides an excellent overview of: ▶ The use of carbon compensated products that align with the GHG mitigation hierarchy ▶ The role of carbon compensated products to extending mitigation action beyond value chains ▶ Considerations around carbon removal and permanent storage ▶ The need for verification by independent international or national carbon standards that support transparent carbon accounting I'd encourage any readers to pick up this document and read it in conjunction with Ipieca's recently launched brief: Net Zero Emissions: Supporting the Paris Agreement and its aims. New Ipieca resource 📢 The role of carbon-compensated products in the energy transition What is carbon-compensation ❓ Carbon-compensation involves a company purchasing and retiring a volume of voluntary carbon credits to compensate for (or offset) greenhouse gas emissions. The new awareness briefing builds a shared understanding of carbon-compensated products, their role in supporting net-zero ambitions and the energy transition, and explores good practice in using them. The DOE Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management announced it will be making $35 million available for the development of tech that reduces CO2 emissions from industries like aviation and shipping, while also opening the door for carbon dioxide removal companies that are focused on removing existing emissions. The funds will come through a prize system that draws on resources in the Investing in America program. #climatepolicy #climatefunding #carbonemissions #CO2emissions https://bit.ly/46A0JNV

Small-scale decarbonisation efforts are often overlooked in the energy sector as the world grapples with hugely broad net-zero targets. However, some truly interesting work is being done across Europe, at a regional level. I spoke with various academics and OECD - OCDE policy makers on how cities can decentralise their energy systems and help consumers adopt more sustainable behaviours
City of dreams: Can Europe engage the public in regional decarbonisation efforts?
