I have been living with a CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) leak since 2022. CSF leaks are not as rare as the literature makes out, however, the awareness and understanding of this condition is poor, causing delays in diagnosing patients. We want this to change… Patients need this to change. I am proud to be part of Target CSF Leaks…a new charity being set up by a small group of passionate individuals who are living with a CSF leak. We will be the first CSF leak charity to register in England and Wales. In order for us to achieve what we need to; we ask for your generosity. We need to raise as much money as possible to be able to: • Upgrade our WordPress Website so we can make use of tools to make it better. • Produce high-quality leaflets. • Send the above leaflets to every hospital with a neurology department, and every GP surgery in the UK. • Produce high-quality, informative videos. • Continue to run our online support group, “Leaky Café” , which started in October 2023. • Run Webinars and invite the best in the industry to talk at them, to further educate medical professionals and patients alike. • We would like to be in a position where we can offer grants to low-income patients who need specialist help. By doing all this and so much more, we can start to make a difference to those who need help, and further educate GPs, A&E medical staff, neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists about this condition, about how to recognise and diagnose a CSF leak faster using basic imaging; about using advanced imaging to locate the leak; and to ensure patients are benefitting through faster diagnosis, and being offered the finest options for effective and targeted treatment. Thank you and please feel free to share

Let's talk about anatomical gifting – a topic that might sound a bit daunting, but it's incredibly important and altruistic. Essentially, anatomical gifting is the generous act of donating one's body, tissues, or organs after death for medical education, research, or transplantation purposes. By choosing to make an anatomical gift, individuals contribute to the advancement of medical knowledge and the improvement of healthcare practices. Medical students rely on donated bodies to learn anatomy and surgical techniques, while researchers use donated tissues to develop new treatments and therapies for various conditions and diseases. You can choose to donate any or only some of your organs, and for any purpose or a limited purpose such as only organ transplant, but not medical science. Making an anatomical gift is a deeply personal decision, and it's crucial to discuss it with loved ones and ensure it's documented in legal paperwork, such as a living will or advance directive. This ensures that your wishes are honored and carried out according to your preferences. If you're considering making an anatomical gift, take the time to research your options and discuss them with your family and healthcare provider. Your decision could leave a lasting legacy of compassion and contribution to the future of medicine. #glastonburyestateplanning #khklaw

Chairperson Board Audit & Risk Committee , Independent Non-Executive Director, Entrepreneur, YPO Integrated (Singapore)
Transforming Lives: The Fred Hollows Foundation’s Mission to End Avoidable Blindness Globally As a recently appointed Board Director of The Fred Hollows Foundation HK & ASEAN, I am thrilled to share the remarkable impact that The Fred Hollows Foundation has achieved in 2023, which was recently announced. The results are a testament to The Foundation's commitment to eliminating avoidable blindness globally. In 2023, The Fred Hollows Foundation: * Screened 4.4 million people for eye diseases * Performed 612,376 eye operations and treatments * Treated 6.8 million people for trachoma * Distributed 154,476 pairs of eye glasses * Trained 36,804 people, including surgeons, nurses, and teachers * Built, renovated, or equipped 1,951 medical facilities, training centres, and schools * Educated 5.9 million school children and community members in eye health and sanitation This impact demonstrates The Foundation's ability to make a tremendous difference. However, the number of people with severe vision impairment and blindness is predicted to double by 2050, reaching 1.7 billion. Looking forward, The Foundation has recently mapped out its global strategy for the next five years. The key focus areas include: 1. Increasing Eye Care Services: Expanding services in countries where FHF operates. 2. Implementing Cost-Effective Solutions: Utilizing proven solutions for common causes of blindness. 3. Raising Awareness: Highlighting the benefits of improving eye health and integrating it into national health policies. 4. Engaging with Governments: Collaborating with governments to scale eye health solutions and secure funding. Recently, meeting Gabi Hollows and the Board in Sydney was spectacular. Gabi is the heart and soul of The Fred Hollows Foundation. An extraordinary woman and the champion of The Fred Hollows Foundation. Her dedication and passion inspire all of us to make a difference in the world. The entire board and team were just fabulous. I am proud to be part of a global community that is relentlessly championing this noble cause worldwide. With a clear mission to ensure no one is needlessly blind and a strong governance structure that maximizes our impact. The Foundation is making a profound difference but its work is far from over. We need everyone's support to continue making a difference. Every donation can help the Foundation train and equip more eye care professionals, provide vital treatments, and advocate for policy changes that prioritize eye health. Every contribution brings us one step closer to a world where everyone has the right to sight. That surge in demand drove body snatchers to steal bodies from graves to sell to medical schools. The bodies of the poor, the mentally ill, and people of color were especially vulnerable. Things are very different now, thanks to new regulations and a better understanding of consent. But this grim history is still reflected in modern institutions. Until 2020, the University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Museum in Philadelphia had skulls on display that belonged to formerly enslaved people. And plenty can still go wrong even when donation is consensual. In August 2022, a Pennsylvania man was arrested for allegedly buying and selling human body parts via Facebook Messenger. At least some of the remains were initially donated to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. After the donor’s gift was used by the university, the remains were sent to be cremated at a non-university funeral home. There, the university said, a mortuary worker stole them. Today, there’s no single federal regulation, registry, or tracking program that handles body and body part donations for research in the US. The American Association of Tissue Banks offers optional accreditation for these programs, but it’s not required by law. Instead, programs are largely governed by each state’s version of the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act, which contains provisions for promoting organ and tissue donation and outlines how people can consent to donate their organs or entire body to science. Whole-body donors must navigate these systems to decide where to donate. Some programs treat donors better than others do. And while there has been progress, body donation programs can still prey on those struggling to afford a conventional cremation or burial. https://lnkd.in/eCiUt22e

The theme of World Leprosy Day 2023 is “Act Now. End Leprosy.” This year’s theme calls attention to three key messages: 🌟Elimination is possible: We have the power and tools to stop transmission and defeat this disease. 🌟Act now: We need the resources and commitment to end leprosy. Prioritize leprosy elimination. 🌟Reach the unreached: Leprosy is preventable and treatable. Suffering from leprosy is needless. One of the SANNI Foundation‘s goals for 2024 is exactly in line with this: We want to give poor people affected by leprosy a new lease of life with free reconstructive operations. In 2024, we want to finance an operation for at least 50 people🧡 Thanks to a donation of CHF 350, a leprosy patient can undergo an operation and be treated, opening up his or her way back into life. The reconstructive surgery enables the patients, who are severely restricted physically, to move and use their limbs to the full again. Future physical disabilities are forestalled in the rehabilitation process. This life-changing therapy is very expensive and time-consuming as it needs both pre- and post-treatment. Apart from the right medicines, the patients also need, above all, nutritious food to strengthen their bodies. By donating a leprosy operation, you give a person a new life. There can be nothing better than to be able to move freely, to go to work and to be with friends and family again – help this become reality for these people as well✨ #sannifoundation #sanni #leprosy #surgery #newlife #donation #prevention #endleprosy #worldleprosyday

As we approach NF2 Awareness Day on May 22, it’s heartwarming to see the efforts to raise awareness and support research for this condition. Real people affected by NF2 are sharing their journeys, shedding light on the challenges they face, and inspiring hope for better understanding and treatments. These personal stories serve as powerful reminders of resilience, courage, and the importance of community. By sharing their experiences, these individuals contribute to a collective effort to improve the lives of NF2 patients and their families. We are each affected differently & people with NF2 are affected by Brain Tumours, Spine Tumours, Optical Tumours, Deafness, Blindness, Epilepsy, vocal chord paralysis, mobility problems, chronic pain, cataracts, facial palsy ... & much more! Today we meet Jo who was 29 years old when her NF2 journey started back in 1999. " I still remember the day as clear as it was yesterday. No-one was sure I was going to make those millennium celebrations! Up until that point, I had a few episodes of losing my balance and my hearing had deteriorated a little by the time I went to the doctors and MRi scans revealed bilateral vestibular schwannomas. Emergency surgery was scheduled for 5 days time when they removed the right sided tumour in a 14 hour brain surgery op which left me deaf on that side with facial palsy. I had severe dry eye problems which resulted in an extra hospital stay. its taken me a long time to get to where i am today" NF2, is a lifelong genetic condition, that weaves itself into the fabric of existence, unyielding and unrelenting. There is no middle or ending to any of our stories. Surgery, radiosurgery, and chemotherapy—are the only options we have. Yet, they come at a cost. Their impact reverberates through the delicate pathways of nerves, often leaving behind scars of lost function. NF2 is for life, an unwavering companion. There is no cure, no magic elixir to erase its presence. Instead, there is resilience, determination, and a shared journey among those who navigate its complexities Please consider donating to research, sharing your story & raising awareness. Neuroimaging (Brain & Spine) Lead & Stroke Specialist (Systems - Admin and Quality) Consultant Founder Vebinars (online platform for Neuroimaging & Stroke) & WSO Future Stroke Leaders 2024-26
Diagnostic Neuroradiology (Cross-sectional Neuroimaging - medical parlance for brain and spine scans) is perhaps at its transition - between Radiology and Neurosciences this is one super-specialization that truly transgresses turf boundaries and the vision forward is for people in the industry to recognize this as a specialty in itself, having served in it for over a decade now, I vouch for it. Myths and Mindsets "Neuroimaging has no value unless you intervene (put in a needle) or see patients in OPD you are invisible to even your employers" - common statements from my colleagues and ex-bosses. "We don't want people who see only brains and spines" - personal experience while looking for specialist jobs in the last year after returning to India. Facts and Stats "Cross-sectional brain and spine scans constitute more than half of total volumes in almost every multi-specialty health care unit and scan centers." "Stroke and Neuro-trauma make up the most common emergency imaging while the majority of elective advanced scans possible in most places are of the brain." The Healthcare Industry in India needs to wake up - there is a dire need of specialists and even by current volume based scenarios - Neuroradiologists are needed, degrees don't always make the only difference, but the passion and hours put into the specialty matter. Like other skillsets, the process has to be in place. We are specialists in brain and spine imaging and it is time we make the identity switch. We consult both patients and physicians alike in our professional capacity. We are the invisible doctors behind the scenes adding value to every scan, do seek us for doubts with regards to any of your brain and spine scans. We agree wholeheartedly with Dr. Joshua Mezrich in STAT that organs “are just too precious to go to waste” and that strong collaboration between OPOs and transplant centers is needed to tackle the critical issue of organ non-utilization. More than 20% of organs recovered by OPOs go unused when they should instead help save the thousands currently awaiting life-saving organ transplants. Dr. Mezrich shares bold ideas that could make a difference while also establishing greater accountability and equity for the organ donation and transplant field. In short: “We need to get these organs to the surgeons and programs willing to use them, for whatever patient they feel will benefit from them."
